Thread: Not really an engineer from NW England
22/10/2019 22:23:01

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. David, John I am in Wyresdale so pretty close.

This forum really contains an amazing amount of useful information, I just wish I understood more of it! Great fun finding out.

Allow me to introduce myself. I am somewhat hesitant to join such august company since I am not an engineer at all. I am primarily a diy woodworker and wood turner living near Lancaster in NW England. My interest is really in making small tools and accessories to assist with my wood turning. To this end I was fortunate about a year ago to acquire a Myford ML7 of 1974 vintage in good condition. I actually have somewhat of a family link to the ML7 in so far as the late Ian Bradley was a friend of my father and actually played the organ at my wedding ( having in typical Ian fashion repaired it first!) I have most of Ian’s books ( presented to my father) on my bookshelf and I have in fact read them all!

It is the article in Model Engineering Workshop on Ian’s workshop engine that has prompted me to finally join this forum having been reading it for the past year.

Although in some ways dated I have to say I find Ian’s books a great resource having never had any teaching in metalwork.

I do have another engineering link since my late uncle Brangwyn was a keen model maker, scratch building beautiful scale cars, traction engines, motor cycles and just about anything else. Amongst the tools I inherited from him and here is one for you Neil, I have a Super Adept! somewhat modified. I have not quite decided what I am going to do with it. It bears all the hall marks of its type ie the headstock is loose, but my uncle managed to make incredibly accurate wheels etc. using it so it cannot be all bad. It does need some tlc so one day I may do something with it.
