I've added a photo to my for sale folder if you want to see it.

Hi Pete, can't seem to find your for sale folder so have messaged you...

Thread: Fusion360 tutorials

I'd be interested to see how you get on with the Cardartifex book Roy, I was only thinking the same a few days ago. I can manage simple stuff (for my 3D printer) but sooner or later I'm going to get stuck! My only concern is that the book seems to go out of date due to F360 updating the layout/commands...

Also, thanks to Thor for his links, I've had a quick look at them and downloaded a couple of guides for reference...

Emgee, thanks for the link, I've used those notes occasionally to get to where I am with it now, or when i've forgotten how to do a command...

That's a bargain and what a great basis to do your upgrades. I've been looking for something similar at a sensible price for ages. Well done!

Welcome from just the other side of The Malverns!

Afraid I'm no clock maker either, watching the chap on The Repair Shop did get me interested but Covid took over and I rather lost the plot wink

You've probably found it, I'm sure there is an ongoing clock thread on here somewhere...

Cheers, Henry.

Thread: VFD - which is best please ?
31/12/2021 11:04:07

Personally I had no experience of using a VFD when I bought my 3 phase Warco GH1332 at the beginning of last year. I looked at the ebay VFD's and having read up on the threads on VFD's here I decided to go to a UK Based company.

Inverter Drive Supermarket are local to me, which was a real bonus, and their technical chap gave me all the information I needed to do the wiring changes in the Warco so that it worked as if it were 2 phase after I'd sent him copies of the wiring diagrams and a few photos, this included marked up wiring diagrams showing exactly what to do. Truly excellent service from them, I wouldn't bother looking elsewhere if I were doing it again.

Thread: Do you "still" enjoy driving?
29/12/2021 18:25:37

For me its all about where and what I'm driving. I have no pleasure driving in towns and cities, busy A roads and motorways.

Our daily, a Skoda Yeti, I enjoy driving when away from those previously mentioned places. I also try to drive it smoothly, minimising braking etc and the auto box on the Yeti is a delight, we actually get better MPG with it than the manual Yeti we had previously.

The TR7 V8 tends to be used for classic car runs and going to shows, is a hoot to drive and I usually get out with a daft grin on my face. Its not that fast but being a convertible the fresh air motoring can be a pleasure.

Finally, my Defender 90 TDi has to be driven in a different light, its a bit tired now, 160k miles and in need of a new clutch but soldiers on. We love the elevated position, its great to see over the hedges, and the crudeness of the old thing. It mainly gets used for the tip run and collecting things that won't fit in the Yeti, we do use it out of choice occasionally though.

So, we are fortunate to have three options available to us, all very different and enjoyable in their own way, it's not so much the vehicle rather the environment they are being used in which would make my decision.

Thread: DRO's and mental agility
22/12/2021 11:44:34

Wouldn't be without one on the mill, it had Z from new so only needed to add X & Y. I've decided against it ion my lathe as the cross slide and compound slides repeat and are accurate enough for my needs.

Mental dexterity? Keeping the enemy (wife) happy provides plenty of that...

Very nice Thor, printed off ready to make!

I usually use the nut and junior hacksaw for small screws and bolts, I find large ones aren't so much of a problem...

You might find some inspiration from this thread Stuart: Link

If you trawl through it someone made the unit into a vertical saw, I have the Aldi version and have had very good use out of it. An issue could be that it may not be big enough for your needs...

Welcome Stuart, nice to see another local here! I'm just down the road near Pershore...

Lovely Martin, even better that the chap at the garden centre kept it for you. A lovely little bit of history!

Thread: New Micrometers
01/12/2021 17:29:47

I dropped on a lovely Starrett 25-50 second hand for £12 about 12 months ago, that started me looking on ebay for 2nd hand Starrett mics to make an identical set and now have 0-25 through to 175-200. All lightly used I don't think I paid more than £20 for any of them. I've stripped, cleaned and oiled them as I get them and thoroughly enjoyed doing that as well. The smaller sizes usually cost more, of course, and have probably had more use so more care needs to be taken with those...

Thread: Model of an epicyclic gear made by apprentices

Posted by Martin Connelly on 04/10/2021 18:15:50:

Not test bed. These are contract builds.

Martin C

Interesting, the first part of the jigsaw was the gearbox, central point so logical I guess. Unfortunately I didn't ever get to Siemens at Lincoln, my main contact was through Greenray as I latterly worked in the Service department. I did get involved with a few of the technical people when things went wrong though...

All good stuff, thanks Martin.

04/10/2021 17:23:02

A test bed build picture at Lincoln I presume Martin?

Great memories Rik...

I remember as a new apprentice going to Bedford and being amazed at the size of some of the machines they had, one thing that stands out in my memory was a couple of us standing in one bore of an in line eight cylinder engine block!

Sadly the engine manufacturing moved to Scandinavia as part of the Rolls Royce rationalisation and now the gears are made in France after RR sold the business at Pershore to three directors who made a right cods of it, finally selling it on to GE who, despite owning Lufkin, had no idea about manufacturing high speed, high power epicyclics. I'm told it took the French engineers eighteen months to get a working gear despite having all the drawings.
