Thread: Suitability of hot rolled steel for machining
05/04/2019 02:01:58

Hot rolled is one of my go to materials in the shop as it is easy to source. I like machining it (it takes a bit to get adjusted as indicated above).

Just make sure you size your material to allow for cleanup. Most hot rolled sections aren't all that square so you have to remove a fair bit of material to clean it up. Obviously cold rolled doesn't suffer from this problem but it suffers from residual stresses.

For most home shop tools hot rolled works quite well.

Just be warned if you wish to scrape the slide in for fitting purposes, scraping steel can be miserable compared to cast iron. If you are going to scrape I would spend the extra money on the cast iron.

Thread: Lathe Carriage Stop
05/04/2019 01:53:37

Thanks everyone!

I finished up the drawings. You can find them on my blog in pdf format: **LINK**

Being a Canadian I do all my engineering work in metric, but for whatever reason I visualize in imperial. That and all my machines are imperial. So the drawings are in inches. For that I apologize.

After finally deciding to just get one done I finished a carriage stop for my main workhorse:

I didn't have to but I wanted to profile it on my bench shaper:

Any of the items that need frequent adjustment use handles so I'm not always fumbling for an allen key or screwdriver. I glued the brass ends on with loctite. Brass was done for looks.

I also did a video up if you wish to watch it.

The direct link is here if you wish:

I'm just finishing up some drawings of the project. I'll post them as soon as I'm done.

Welcome Justin, lots of ATMs on here.

I just looks at a few of your photos and the drive stuff looks really interesting. Thanks John.

Regarding the ATM hobby (and I know this isn't a ATM forum) it seems that there isn't as much interest as there once was. Maybe I'm wrong. Just seems many folks (at least over on this side of pond) are losing a bit of interest.

I've always had a love for ATM - never had the time or the tools. Now with my engineering degree out of the way (I'm not that young - did at night school with kids - not overly recommended) I want to build some high precision optics and scopes. We'll see where it goes.

Thanks Jim! I'm hoping to post some interesting stuff when I get the time.

Thread: Slitting Saw Arbor

Just finished a slitting saw arbor for use in my milling machine and lathe:

If you want to make one of these I did up drawings:

Thanks everyone!

Right now I'm in a phase of making tools to make tools so I can complete a project. I really want to start on a Zeiss style mirror grinding machine for telescope optics - which is a rather large project that involves a significant amount of machining. But first I need to finish that cut knurling tool I'm working on.

As for machines I have a 6.5" (165mm) Standard Modern long bed lathe (13" swing for north americans). I have a Rong Fu round column mill drill, a 7" (177mm) metal shaper and I'm currently doing a spindle rebuilt on a Delta Rockwell surface grinder. The surface grinder is a long way off as I think I might need to machine up an entire new spindle for it because of some very shoddy work done by the previous owner.

I also recently aquired a ISEL CNC router table that I need to finish mounting a spindle on. I'm hoping to use it for engraving work and profiling in wood and aluminum.

I also post videos on Youtube - I might include them from time to time.

Hi everyone,

I'm a home shop machinist based out of Ontario Canada and just wanted to say hello to everyone.

Looking forward to being part of the discussions and posting some of the work I do.

Justin
