Thread: How to machine a flat and a slot on each end of small bar that are in line with eachother |

Success using a spilt block , took longer to make up the split block than the part , always the way ! Rounded the flat end to suit the piston swing Thanks for the advice ! |

This may seem simple but I am a bit stumped how to do this In the drawing below I and have to machine a slot on one end and a flat on the other , If I hold it in stevensons collet holder to use a slitting saw for the slot , i have to remove and turn it round to mill the flat on the other end, thereby losing the horizontal plain. It is too short to get a DTI on the other end to adjust for flatness as this will be inside the collet. Can any of you season engineers give some pointers on the process for doing this Cheers Chris |

Rik Dont use it until you have checked over the machine with a multi meter ,. Check all Exposed metal parts back to the earth pin of the 3 pin plug . Better safe than sorry As Robert says it should not rely on a grub screw for an earth path. I would connect an earth wire from the incoming earth block to the chassis of the machine to be sure Chris |

Rik I had an identical issue with my Wm16b after head scratching and help on this forum I found out that the machine was not earthed correctly step 1. Get a multi tester and check from the earth pin of the 3 pin plug of the mill to an exposed metal part of the machine it should be around 0.1 ohms if it’s more than this I would check the earth block in the control panel is bonded to the chassis correctly. Do not use the machine until you have done this. step 2. If step 1 was ok check the earthing on the socket it’s plugged into.
hope that helps regards chris |

Thread: A good toolpost drill design |
20/01/2020 13:12:56 |
Thanks for the suggestion Guys. I guess it comes down to either a Flexible shaft design or go for a motor mounted above the spindle to provide power. I like your modification Mike . Rod does the treadmill motor have plenty of torque at lower revs? |

Hi all I find myself often having to cross drill or drill on a pcd on the lathe. I have been searching the forum and web for a good toolpost drill design.Up to now I have used a Dremmel type drill to fit on my Dickson tool post on my S7 but as everyone knows they run too fast and don’t have the torque required to do anything but a small hole. I have Steve Jordan’s ideas on YouTube but they seem unwieldy and top heavy. Has anyone pout there made a robust drill that can be speed adjustable and plenty of torque? Chris |

I did give quite a pull, no movement , I noticed the woodruff slot goes through the the black disk as well. Maybe a little more brute force! |

Hi All Just bough a Raglan Miller. Its in a reasonable condition for its age. Does anyone have a manual showing the exploded assembly, I need to take off the dials to clean and adjust, I have taken off the handles and then presented with a black disk with no discerning way of removing it to get to the dial. See pics Any help very much appreciated! Chris |

John, How did you get on mounting the mill? Looks like I am going to buy a super 7 and a Vma mill and will need to attach them as you needed to. Any pics or help gratefully received !

Thanks all for your comments , I have a few of the books mentioned and have been watching a lot of you tube videos as well. When i did my apprenticeship at Marconi's I spent a year in the machine shop---probably forgotten more than I learnt. I am desperately trying to make room in my shed for the equipment I need, Which is proving a battle with all the other crap I have accumulated!

Hello all I have been lurking reading the forums for a while. I hope to be setting up a small workshop soon mainly for small static steam engines.. Does anyone have a link to a website that could give me a basic list of kit to get going. I intend to get a small sc4 type lathe and maybe a mill. But it’s all the bits and pieces that I need. I need a basic list to get me going that I can build on over time All help appreciated Regards Chris
