Thread: Emco FB2 quill |

Hi David, Have bought a used FB2 semi disassembled, everything else looks to be there apart from the complete quill assembly, gaskets and some screws. I did own another FB2 while living in Australia but sold before moving back to NZ. No problem making the gaskets and getting the hardware but no luck finding a quill.

Thread: Emco FB2 Quill bearings |

Update: with the Needle bearing part number known I was able to forward this on to the bearing supplier and they are working on sourcing a replacement. I was also able to extract the old bearing and outer race from the quill, it came pretty easily a few taps after a little bit of heat. The tapered roller bearing, is this a replacement of one of the ball bearings at the top of the quill? What would be the advantage and would it be worth doing? |

Hi Ray thanks for that, I will try replacing the bearing like for like for a start as the shaft does not appear to have a lot of wear failing that will try the bronze bush. When you replaced the bearings was it just a simple case of swapping out the needle roller cage? Or was there a sleeve inside the quill that neeeds to be extracted and a replacement pressed in? Do you happen to know the bearing part number? Thanks, Sam

Hi Gray, thanks for the reply. Im located in Australia so assumed there woud be no Emco representation over this side to source parts from, im sure it woud be faster also to hand make the seals. will have a scour on ebay and google see what I can find.

Success! Picked up capacitor from a local motor repair shop ($10.50) and hooked it up temp to test. Will wire in permanently once i get around to fabing up a stand and possibly a chip tray. Photos attached with table off showing previous owners homemade base, very heavy!

Hi Joe that all makes sense re capacitor location when mill was mounted to the lathe, I will be relocating on/off switch from side of motor where it is mounted now onto the stand that I intend to fabricate for the mill and will mount the capacitor and a new connector block inside an IP rated ABS box with all wiring run in flexible conduit. Our supply voltage here in Australia usually fluctuates between 230V and 240V so to be sure I will need a 460V, 6uF capacitor? Cheers, Sam

Hi guys thanks for the info, I will shoot down to local electrical supplier in the morning and see what they have, failing that will contact some motor repair shops. As for the FB2, when I purchased the machine the seller said it was wired to a Emco maximat super 11 lathe. Im thinking the two have been seperated by the original owner as the X/Y table are of a different brand (Demanders Verktygsfabrik AB - Sweeden), and the steel base section that the column and X/Y table are mounted to appears to be custom fabricated. I will post pictures up when I get time. Thanks again, Sam |

Hi all, I have just acquired an EMCO FB2 mill from a deceased estate that I wish to learn the basics of light milling on. It seems this mill was originally attached to a lathe and as such shared the start capacitor/condenser. Would anyone on here happen to know what value capacitor I would require to get the machine running? Plenty of part numbers etc in the spare parts manuals but no capacitance or voltage ratings. On the motor name plate reads 6uF, 460V? have attached pic of name plate, any help much appreciated.
