Thread: UKCA and CE Marking of Boilers
04/08/2023 16:39:19

Hi Nigel

We could start another thread. For me we are done, seems we are back to CE marking. UKCA was an unnecessary diversion. For us we just need to know we are looking for CE mark or Orange Book amateur makers mark when buying or testing a boiler.

Hi Martin

There has been CE marking in the UK since the 1990's. Including our size boilers.

“Demise” in that the CE mark will not be dropped as seemed to be part of Brexit. This would have forced all appropriate products to be UKCA mark compliant. So, if you export boilers, why would you bother with additional UKCA requirements, CE does it.

This change will also answer the questions around importing a boiler into UK from abroad. CE marking will still be valid.

From a pedants point of view perhaps UKCA has not gone, but there seems little reason to use it. The politicians are hardly likely to say we wasted everybody's time trying to introduce a new UKCA mark are they. Time will tell!

Thanks Jason

Are there many boilers around with the UKCA mark, I wonder. Going to be an oddity in years to come. CE marking from 1993 then a couple of years with UKCA a possibility, then back to CE. Probably saved an Orange Book rewrite!

Hi

With today's announcement on the demise of the UKCA mark, what markings should appear on a commercial boiler, UK made and supplied now or in the future? Are there any UK commercial boilermakers? I take it that CE marks have always been acceptable and will continue to be.

Thread: Unable to view back issues of ME.

Hold the elves! It was a flash player issue!

Hi Neil

Are the elves available? Seems I have reverted to "an error has occured.........." Is there a known reason for the recoccurance of this?

Thanks

Nick

Edit:- had got as far as second article this morning, print screen seemed different (brought up single page instead of double page) so thought I would see if this change would make direct print possible. No access this evening.

Hi Neil

Many thanks for your reply, a rather creepy edit just as I login.

My initial problem was unable to view, which your heplful elves fixed overnight. Many thanks.

Not a great user of computers, which is why I have print and digital. I took ME from early 1970's to late 90's and have them for reference. Only came back to model engineering in last few years so big gap in knowledge.

The copyright issue did not occur to me earlier, mainly because I have managed to print from my pocket mags login. This gave me the impression that printing was part of the package. It was your fellow moderator Jason that suggested I print to pdf, which is more convenient with a laptop and out of range wifi printer.

Copyright usually allows copying for own use, so if I screen capture (will need wheel mouse) and print for my own use will mytimemedia still be unhappy?

As a creative myself, I know too well how it feels when you get ripped off.

Thanks again

Hi Jason

So what have I failed to do from the link provided? I have :-

Checked subscription status and user details

Checked cookie policies

Emptied Cache

Checked for latest Flash Player

Ensured that Plug ins are working

Noted that you may need Kate on the case, but she could be too busy with GDPR law

Not using a VPN

Reluctant to start downloading other browsers in the hope it may solve my problem

I have received my latest subscription confirmation email so no Spam issues

Have I missed something?

Some more information on my system:-

I use a Dell Laptop

It is black

It has a 15” screen

I do not have the touch screen facility enabled

How does this and the lack of mouse help with my print problem?

If you need other system info then please specify. I may supply via private mail, it would leave me vulnerable if I post too much info on an open forum.

Many thanks yet again Jason.

Regards

Nick

Hi Jason

What I was doing was print to PDF. I had given up with actual prints, as away from printer.

With older back numbers we went around the print dialogue box, barbers pole....... sequence with nothing happening.

Using the latest issues that you say are HTML5 it appeared that control P worked. I could save a pdf file. I have just viewed the PDF files I saved. There is the page as viewed but a big blank space where the ME content should be. Hmmm, should have checked what actually printed to pdf, not assume that what I had saved was useable.

What is the cut off (how old the back number has to be) before you can print. Clearly there would be no point subscribing as I do to print + digital if you can print the digital. Some smart ass with a commercial printer would be selling the lastest magazine issue at a cut price. They would only have printing costs, no editorial etc. expences. What copyright is all about, fully understand the commercial issue.

As to" use mouse wheel", not possible with laptop touch pad!

Many thanks again.

Thanks again Jason

Its good that a volunteer like yourself has solutions. I will download chrome or similar and give it a go. Its a good work round but does not solve the base problem.

I think now that mytimemedia need to engage with me. It would seem that there is a backward compatability issue that needs to be adressed. I can print recent back numbers, but an up to date browser cannot print older back numbers.

There appears to be at least three ways the stored back numbers are presented. The latest allows printing, and you may zoom to a size that works for the user. Full marks.

On the older back numbers viewing works fine if a bit clunky, only two sizes (too small to read or zoom to a size that keeps you continuously scrolling). Unable to print without experimentation downloading other older browsers. Nill Point.

Perhaps myTIMEmedia could get a LORD to wield a SONIC 1/2" A/F SPANNER, please.<grin>

Many thanks for your help Jason

I can succesfully print back issues ME 4605 and later (higher Nos). Using control P brings up print dialogue box and print completes succesfully. The look of the back issue viewer is different for these issues, there is no print tab.

Earlier issues (4597 or 4588) have a viewer that only has a print tab at the top. Printing from this does not work, nor does control P.

Even earlier issues (4189) have print tab at the top and print icon at side, these and control p do not work.

It would appear to me that your older archived back issues are held in formats not comapatible with up to date browsers, such as Firefox 66.

How do I print the parts of back issues that interest me. I paid for this sevice last year, and have just renewed for another year.

Hi Jason

Thanks for the further help. You are a moderator, does that mean you are connected with ME, its publishers or web presence owners? Or are you a volunteer, as many in our hobby are, always willing to help others?

I took the PDF route you suggest from an Ebay page. I sucessfully downloaded and saved a pdf of the page. When doing the same from ME, I choose PDF from printer dialogue box, a barbers pole type icon opens in a new small window, windows blue "I'm working" cursor appears for several minutes. This cursor returns to normal arrow, barbers pole and print dialogue box disappear. No sign of a pdf to save or print!

Just renewed print and digital for another year. Thanks again for your help and do not wish to antagonise those who genuinely wish to help. Where do I go to to get what I thought I paid for? It has worked fine until now.

Kind regards

Nick

Many, Many, thanks for continuing your assistance.

You have the article I am interested in spot on.

I have this morning tried printing from two different printers. One over Wifi, the other by USB cable. I ran troubleshooter on both with no issues. Also I printed succesfully from other websites (Ebay) from the same browser (firefox) without isssues. By having the print queue open whilst printing I can see the document appear, spool, print and disappear from the queue.

When attempting printing I did as you suggest with the tab at the top and also from the print icon at the side of the open magazine page., where you can choose multiple pages. When printing ME I get the dialouge box (as a seperate small window) similar to the left hand white section of the jpg in your post. I press OK and this box disappears but nothing in the print queue.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks

Nick

Many thanks dear Elvemaster

Viewing the back numbers (self steering riding trucks) consistently. But, cannot print! Perhaps the elves could carve the articles in stone and leave them at the door to my workshop? <big grin>

Nick

Note to self, must learn how to do the winking smiley thingys.

Many thanks for all help and advice.

By some miracle (with same browser, without any changes) I have been able to view the article this morning.

Computers! I hate them!

Thanks again

Nick

(If it cannot be fixed with an 1/2 inch A/F spanner, I probably cannot fix it)

Hi

Whenever I try to view a back issue of ME I get a page that says "An Error Has Occured, I'm sorry but we cannot processyour request at this time (bad referrer)

I have tried several times over this weekend with the same result. Previously it has worked perfectly.

Any thoughts of what is going/ I am doing wrong please.

Many thanks

Nick
