Thread: Material for a Chuck Backplate
18/06/2020 16:07:36

Is it for a DB10? I bought a backplate for a C6 from ARC, only difference is 52mm nose hole. I sleeved and bored to 50mm to fit the db10s.

Chester after sales are awful to say the least. I bought a DB10S last year and promised myself I'd never spend another penny there. Got mill and bandsaw from Warco and had a much better experience.

Mine did the same just before the belt snapped, changed to bi metal and fine now.

Another option is to fit a Machine DRO kit, i did this to my WM16, great bit of kit and easy to fit.

I like that, looks great.

Thread: Boring bar with inserts shape choice??

I bought a set of micro boring bars from Bangood, they work rather well. Much better than the set I got with my boring head.

Thread: Chuck backplate mistake
11/11/2019 09:28:26

Not threaded, it's for a DB10 Super.  A slight lapse in concentration and I took 0.2mm off instead of 0.02mm, must try harder as my school reports used to point out.

David is right in that it is this part that determines the position of the chuck, register is a push fit but the slack from behind it would throw the chuck out.

Bore out and bush it is then.

Thanks gents.

Ooops, I've taken a smidgen too much from the nose hole of a backing plate I was making.

Should I/Can I

a: shim it (beer can fits great)

b: make hole bigger amd sleeve it/loctite

c: bin it

Nice work Paul, do you have any drawing available?

Not at the moment, I had an original vice to work from.

What did you make the jaws from Paul and were they hardened?

O1 tool steel, hardened, tempered then cold blued.

Depends on club rules/local bylaws but generally yes they are. I tie these for display or as tying excercise rather than to fish with.

JohnF, spot on it's a Thunder and Lightning.

Lovely looking vice and fly!

The design looks simular to a LAW vice.

Steve.

It is copied from a LAW vice, sold my LAW a couple of years ago and regretted it. I've also got a LAW anti reverse reel, I need some more skills before trying one of those though.

The fly is a Classic Salmon fly the name of which escapes me, I'll have to check my books.

Thanks to the help and advice I get off here the vice is finally completed. The only thing I didn't make is the button cap screw, everything else on the clamp and vice is mine apart from the design (copied from existing vice).

New jig worked a treat, thanks for advice fellas. Steep learning curve this stuff as I only started messing with metal recently.

20/10/2019 12:38:30

Revised jig, I'll see how this goes.

Better photo without collet, bend needs to be on blue mark in line with one of the end flats.  303 stainless

I have to put a 45deg bend in this part where it meets the pin. The 10mm shaft that's in the collet has to remain true as it will run in a bush, the 25mm collar stops me using a normal 2 pin approach (I think).

Heat or not?

Would you build a differnt jig?

How would you do it?
