Thread: Milling for beginners

Jason, that's great information. A lot more to consider than just diameter of the tap. I think I'll try a larger tap in a through hole before I'll feel confident to try tapping any blind holes in a 'prize' casting.

Thanks again.

Jason, thanks for your brilliant articles and videos, I have found them very informative.

I have the SX2.7 mill which I collected from ARC a couple of weeks ago. My question: In article 6 in MEW 271 you mentioned Tapping mode. Is there a minimum size would you suggest Tapping mode could be used for please?

I have several 7BA holes to tap in cast iron but don't feel confident to go this small (at least to start with). M6 perhaps, also have a couple of 1/4" x 40 ME holes to Tap. Do you have any thoughts if courser or finer threads are better with tapping mode?

Many thanks

Dave

Thread: For discussing the merits of alternative 3D CAD programs.

Thanks Martin, no the only package I have used is Sketchup and that was years ago for woodwork projects. I was just interested what others would recommend. I'll check out MoI.

Thanks Dave

Hopefully this has not been covered and I've missed it in this thread. Was wondering if anyone had recommendations of a CAD package to run on Apple Mac please? I believe Alibre only runs on Windows.

Thanks

Dave

Thread: Hello from Leicestershire

Thanks for your welcomes guys. With the alternate definitions for 'Oxymoron' I thought I'd stumbled into a round of "I'm sorry I haven't a clue" from radio 4.  smiley

Thanks for the welcome gents.

Chris, I've only ever used Oxymoron on a Motorhome forum in the past. So anywhere else was not me. I just like the word!

Brian, Mansfield is not far. I really think of myself as a Nottinghamshire lad as that's where I was brought up. I attended Arnold and Carlton college which is/was not so far from you. Part of my course was to spend every Wednesday afternoon in the wonderful workshop.

Hello all, I am based in Leicestershire in the East Midlands. I have been lurking and soaking up the excellent information on the forum for a while.

Back in school days I did ‘O’ level Metalwork and Technical drawing followed by an OND in Engineering technology back in the 70’s. I then spent the next 30 years working in IT (strange how careers evolve). Having retired I wanted to get back to playing with Metal again and trying to remember the workshop practice lessons.

My workshop is in a single garage shared between woodwork tools and now a lathe and mill. I have had a Sieg SC4 for a little over a year. One of the bundles from ARC when Neil started the series in MEW. First task was a little Wobbler engine. Now working on a Stuart 10V. Having completed most of the turning on this, decided to keep the lathe company with an SX2.7 mill which I collected this week.

I thought it was time to introduce myself as although I’ve learnt lots from Jason's excellent Milling for Beginners articles I am sure I’ll have some milling questions.
