Thread: Rothenberger Oxy Propane
08/05/2021 11:48:16

My experience with a Oxyturbo set was one of frustration, flame too small, torch not very nice etc. It just about managed to repair a lug on a small aluminium casting using Lumiweld but it was hard work. This was quite a few years ago and things may have improved but the Rothenberger looks very similar to the Oxyturbo that I binned in disgust.

I now want to try again but it will be the lightweight Oxy propane sets that I am looking at, the sort of thing that look and behave like a normal OA torch. The initial cost of kit will be less than the Rothenberger but the deposit on propane and oxygen bottles will take out the saving, however lower re fill cost of gas bottles with make substantial savings if used for more than the occasional bit of silver soldering or brazing.

I think there are two other shameless practices that ought be stamped on.

One is the price-by-use fraud, typical of major car manufacturers, whereby an identical part is priced according to the particular make and model that uses it. It was an Audi/VW dealer who told me this - VW's main spares warehouse is twinned with one labelled 'Audi', and the same parts are much pricier in the latter. If bought-in components they are likely to be much costlier than the same ones in boxes labelled as say, Ford, spares. To disguise the fact, the parts are given identity-numbers by different systems. These companies are by no means alone in it though; and the insurers are in cahoots with the racket by their insistence on using only the main-dealers' OEM supplies.

That's just progressive taxation. I approve of the gentle pressure to buy cheaper cars.

regards Martin

Running an older Audi, as I do, it can be used to your advantage, for a few years after Audi discontinue spares support you can still get many items from the VW or Skoda parts listings.

Thread: Type identification of a endmill tool holder (Hauser)
06/03/2021 12:25:36

Just to say hello and put my hand up as another ex Admiralty Hauser mill owner / restorer. I only found this thread looking for information on P9 collets.

My Hauser has the Admiralty brass asset plate but has been robbed of the Hauser name plate.

I too have found the threads used on my mill are different to those mentioned elsewhere on the WWW and agree with comments that Hauser seem to have built to purchaser's specifications. Most of the threads on mine appear to be BSF / BSW with 0BA and 3BA for smaller parts.

I am at the stage of thinking about the table stops, I have some of the straight ones and one of the curved ones from the rotary table. My stop screw threads appear to be 5/16 40tpi and 1/4 40 tpi
