Thread: Lidl Portable Bandsaw

I saw that mentioned in the YouTube link, where guy seemed to have his workshop in his living room.

It's a question of how far to disassemble it rather than returning it and going back to the angle grinder.

05/12/2020 15:45:16

Any suggestions?

I succumbed to buying the Aldi band saw after having returned the Lidl band saw.

I just inserted the blade into the band saw and tightened it up fully. Put the covers back on, didn't put on the stand, plugged in and pressed that on/off button.

The motor runs, but the blade doesn't go round. Took it apart, put it back together again, changed the speed to low and high and still nothing.

Took it apart again, took blade off and tried running it carefully without the blade and without the 2 plastic covers on, still the motor starts up, but nothing turns.

Not really sure how it is meant to work, but did see mention in the instructions of a v-belt, so maybe it could be that.

Any thoughts on my problem are most welcome.

I bought the Lidl band saw last Sunday, set it up to try it out on Wednesday and returned it today, Saturday. I tired it out cutting a piece of steel rod, which it started to cut okay, but then the blade just stopped moving. It would move briefly if I released blade tensioner a little bit, but would then stop. I think that for the time being, maybe I will just continue with the angle grinder.

As pretty much a novice, I fitted a DRO to my Axminster SC4 and it gave me far more confidence and in my opinion is well worthwhile doing. It wasn’t difficult to fit, but I am so happy that I did.

Thread: Warco WM14 mill with DRO

Hi Dave, no you are correct in that, but I just felt more comfortable going for the the metric version, plus i still need to get round to fitting the DRO on the mill.

Hi Rog, I ended up buying a Chester 20V mill in the end as Warco could only supply me with an imperial mill, WM14 or WM16. I was originally planning on getting the WM14 due to it's size, but then realised that I could fit the larger WM16 but went for the the Chester 20V as it was very similar and available.

As regards the DRO, I ordered mine through Chester, but it was sent to me from Machine DRO, so it is something that I still have to fit, but as I have fitted one previously from them to my lathe, I don't expect any problems. As far as I could see, the Warco one fitted to the WM16 is pretty much a standard optical DRO, whereas the factory fitted one fitted to the WM14 is non standard and incompatable with with other DRO's if you wanted to upgrade in the future.

When I spoke to Warco about the DRO, they could have supplied a standard DRO for the WM14 and fitted it for £200 if I wanted.

I would have probably bought a Warco mill if it had been available.

Hopefully my experience will help you with what you want to do, but if you have any further questions, please ask.

Thread: New Mill
03/04/2020 20:00:16

Downloaded the Grizzly manual and it really does look exactly the same mil when i look at the parts diagrams.

Why is it that we have to do to America to get decent instruction manuals, lol.

Thanks

Thanks all, most helpful.

Thanks, paraffin did occur to me as a possibility, but i haven't got any. WD40 is something that I do have and will give it a try.

Thanks.

One further question, the instruction manual for the Mill is quite small and I was wondering if anyone knew of a more complete instruction manual. When I bought my lathe I had a similar issue and found a really good one for the lathe on the Little Machine Shop website. Unfortunately, they don't have a similar one for my mill.

Hi, I have just taken delivery of a new Champion 20V and am looking to install it.

The instruction manual says about removing the anticorrosive agent applied to the mill for transport and storage purposes using "Stove Distalliate".

Unfortunately, Stove Distilliate is not something I am aware of and looking online hasn't really helped. Can someone enlighten me as to what it is and what it may be called in the UK, or what I could use as an alternative?

I am sure I will have more questions, later but that's a start for now.

Thanks, Keith

Thread: 1/4" BSF v 1/4" CEI
04/02/2020 09:19:39

I've found cross head sets in cycle thread, but not allen bolts/cap heads so far.

Yes in the late 60's they changed to unc/unf which I have on a later Triumph 500.

I must confess that I was somewhat suprised when i went to my lockup to find that I haven't changed then to cap heads, but maybe that was due to lack of money 40 years ago when I last rode the 3ta.

1958 Triumph 3TA, on the timing cover, the gearbox cover and the clutch cover.

How compatible is a 1/4" BSF threaded bolt when compared with a 1/4" cycle thread bolt? I understand that the BSF thread is at 55 degrees as opposed to cycle thread being 60 degrees.

The motorcycle that I am working on uses cycle threads on it's cases, but BSF threaded bolts are a lot easier to obtain, so was just wondering if they were a fit.

Thanks, Keith

Thread: Honda Brake Cable
19/01/2020 18:17:30

JJ Cables will supply all the necessary parts to make your own cable as far as I am aware, but are also happy to make cables to whatever length to ask them to. I bought a throttle cable off them recently and they said that if I needed it to be a different length, to give them a buzz and they would sort it out.

18/01/2020 18:09:57

I was going to mention JJ cables as well, they attend a lot of motorcycle autojumbles and are very helpful.

Aonother option if Venhill, but they are quite expensive.

Thread: We fitted a DRO to my SC4 lathe
15/01/2020 13:28:19

As title says, we've just fitted a DRO supplied by M-DRO to my Axminster (Seig) SC4 lathe. The DRO kit that M-DRO supplied was the one that they supply for the Chester DB8VS and the instructions supplied were fine except for a few minor adjustments. No additional cutting was required, although after having cut the Magnetic Support Profile that was to be fitted to the saddle, we realised that we didn't need to.

Other than checking that it works okay, I haven't had a chance to use it properly, but all in all am happy with the installation.

Thanks to my mate Steve that helped me with the installation.

Thread: Warco WM14 mill with DRO
14/01/2020 19:48:16

A quick update. I was surfing the internet and came across a Grizzly G0758Z which seems to be the same as the Warco WM14 mill. On looking at the Grizzly web site found some details of the factory fitted DRO.

Based on what I saw, I will not be getting the Warco WM14 with the factory fitted DRO, but will purchase the one supplied by Warco, which I will fit myself.
