Thread: Another large engine ID
30/04/2020 05:20:27

large engine 2.jpgI seem to have a knack for buying unknown engines. I bought this one for the Stuart 504 boiler but have no idea what it is or who supplied / supplies the castings. I`m not sure of the bore and stroke as it`s not arriving until later today.

Anybody any ideas?large engine 1.jpg

A few of their models look a lot like Stuart. I`ll take some better photos and maybe get in touch with Bolton models.

Just measured my flywheel and its 4 1/2".

Very nice engine no matter what, although all of my collection are Stuarts.

The standards for the Stuart 7 changed in the 1930s, and they made it the 7a.

I can`t seem to find any images for the Bolton No.3 on google, but I`d be interested if somebody could upload one.

I`ve just done a materials test with a magnet, and it turns out the very bottom base is actually wood!!! Very well done though otherwise I would have spotted it sooner. The proportions are right compared to my Stuart 10, so the 9" height is still a mystery, Unless it is a Bolton.

If not Stuart, maybe reeves. Any idea if they had a model that size in the 1920s or 30s?

Not checked the stroke but it's 1" bore

Thanks John

Too small for a No.1 as well.

the 1 should be 12"

the 4 should be 10"

and the 7 or 7a from memory should be 7 1/2"

Umm came out on its side. Trying to do this on my phone so sorry for poor photo.

I bought this a couple of years ago with a 1920s Stuart 504 boiler. I always thought it was an old type No7 but I've recently measured the height at 9" not including the fixing bolts. Just wondering if anyone has any idea what it could be? I think it's too tall for a 7 and not tall enough for a No.4.

Now this is handy....

well it would be if I could figure out how to add photos.

Well, I didn't like to publicly make a big deal about the missing dangly bit but seeing it in black and white on a drawing means I have to acknowledge it 😁

Seriously though, those close ups will come in really handy as I've basically got a non runner at the moment.

Not spoken to Andy yet but they do sell a machined kit so parts will be available, that's providing mine isn't the old type.

05/03/2020 14:30:20

Thanks Bill.

that is very handy, but unfortunately I have a part missing. The bar going from the steam inlet to the governor. I've been looking at item 2100, would you call that an old type governor or new? Looks the same as mine.

05/03/2020 13:53:27

Thanks Jason.

could be my engine is an older one as the valve chest doesn't have the Stuart "S", not necessarily the case though. I've not taken my own photos yet but there are a few on the original eBay listing... 184188235279

Thanks Bill.

I was hoping not to have to buy a copy as all the machined parts are done.Ill see if I can upload a photo and maybe somebody can id any missing parts.

Hi All.

Just bought a second hand No.9. I`m very happy with it as its all there including pump and governor. There are a few fixings missing but they are not a problem but the governor has a ball missing and possibly other parts. Just wondering if anybody has the governor drawing to double check a few things?

Thank old School.

Dave (the emerald isle) actually sent me a couple of files. Couldn`t hurt to have a backup though just in case anything is missing. I`ll PM my email now.

Hi All.

Seems these are like hens teeth to come by. I also need a copy if anybody can help?

I`ve just bought an almost complete model but there is a bit to finish and I`m not sure of the inner workings.

Thanks in advance...Mike
