I used to have a debit donation to a well known dogs home (not dogs trust). One Saturday I received a call from a company employed by the dogs home to raise funds. The caller was quite open and explained they were being paid thousands for one months work and would raise sufficient extra funds to cover their cost and provide a profit to said dogs home. It would appear the sole strategy was to call existing donors and ask for more money. After a fairly pressured phone call I declined to offer more money and instead transferred my donation to a hopefully more worthy cause. Charity is indeed all about business these days.

I was also looking at that Myford but I noticed the bullwheel has a chipped tooth.

Good evening folks, first time on here for me for about a week and so I'm enjoying reading through a few threads. The reason for the gap is I'm recovering C-19. Positive test result new years eve, when downhill on the 5th and only really surfaced on the 11th. For me it was (and still is) far worse than Flu, and I've only had that twice in my life and general opinion is I'm still two weeks away from being normally mobile again. I'm 62 and in general good health and not over weight to any degree. I guess my point is, keep safe and be guided by your own common sense rather than any statistic regardless of how dire or indeed comforting it might seem.

I've been following this thread with great interest as I have a very old RF-25 that I'm trying to accurize. A lot of good tips here and pleased to say after following them my old beast after a number of trial shims now reads 0.0003" - 0.0007" over a footprint of 5" square, more than good enough for my needs. My stainless thermos is around 10 years old now and still good, other generic versions have come and gone, my brother had a Stanley and I recall he has a couple of returns before he found a good one.

Thanks for all your replies. The machine is the 3.3" x 9.25" and most likely pretty worn but almost a give away so worth a punt. This one has the rear bearing sleeved because the casting was cracked and we guess the front bearing has a bit of wear as well but haven't yet measured the float. Lathes.co do have an appraisal of the machine but I guess we're looking for actual experiences of running one and how others have dealt with the issues attached to 60 odds years of potential abuse.

Any folks on here have one of these little machines? A friend of mine has picked one up and is after more information, weak points, issues to consider during refurb, and yes have looked on Lathes.co and there is a good photo collection but not much else. Web searches have revealed very little so any information will be appreciated.

Hoffmans in Chelmsford was a bearing manufacturer, looking at old maps a "bearing manufactory". I think attempts to bomb it were made in WW2 and I believe it closed sometime in the early nineties. Almost the entire site is now cleared and occupied by Anglia Ruskin Uni but one building along with a nearby Marconi building retained.

I have an old worn RF25 and when I stripped it the base/column had a shim inserted. I reshimmed when I reassembled and its close enough for the type of work I do. The main thing to remember is think through operations and tool lengths to avoid needing to raise or lower the head and losing datum.

I find that as soon as you ask them to tell you your name they hang up straight away.

Cut technologies, Barnsley. Used them for laser work in my old job. They do have a minimum order charge that may not fit your requirements but otherwise found them very good.

As an apprentice in the mid 1970's I operated a cridan as machine shop experience in the turned parts shop, not long after that CNC lathes started to appear and I guess their time was up. I seem to recall it relied upon a spring loaded cam but I might have misremembered, it was a long time ago.
