Thread: File Renovation
04/06/2017 19:51:49

40 years ago when I started teaching Technology we used to send files for sharpening commercially every couple of years. We used to send them about 3 times. They were never as good as a new file, but a fraction of the cost. When cuts in funding took place in the 1980s I did them myself using dilute sulphuric acid. 10 mol. The same strength as used for pickling beaten copper work. Worked quite well but some I left too long ,so took to much off.

The acid attacks all the metal equally so the rounded edge which makes the file blunt is reduced. Application of electricity would spread matters up as in electro chemical deburring or electro chemical machining.

I think that files are now so cheap that it is not worth sharpening them. At school I am ordering new files for little more than I was in 1980.... But the quality is of course very poor these days!!

Thread: Myford 10 accessories

Thank you for the information.

Has anyone tried the Chinese quick change tool posts which seem to be aluminium? Seems soft to me for a tool post.

Can anyone tell me why the Myford 10 travelling tool post is canted over whereas the Myford 7 is straight?

Does anyone know what the difference is between the two machines regarding the fixing point for the travelling steady?

Thank you

A new member. I have recently purchased a Myford 10. I have found two new parts but sold for Myford 7. Both are massively cheaper than parts sold for Myford 10. Could anyone tell me if they would fit my machine or they they could be modified to fit?

I am looking at a travelling steady and a quick change tool post. Can anyone help please? Thank you

Thread: Hello from Oxfordshire

I was an engineering apprentice in 1969, since 1977 a Technology teacher, so have had use of a school workshop.

Having had no workshop at home for over 20 years, I am soon to take delivery of a 12 foot by 8 foot log cabin.

I have just bought a Myford 10, which rather different to what I am used to, so will be seeking advice from Myford 10 users.

My interest is largely based around old tools and producing reproductions, especially early metal woodworking planes.
