Hi thanks for the input the pulley could be smaller so will acquire a new one, and the VFD is a power flex 40 a present from work 🙂 I don’t have a manual for it my motor is a 50 hz 3/4 hp three phase but no extra fan.

Hi all just thought I would share my myford ml hybrid with you. I have managed to fit VFD and three phase motor it works well but lacks torque at low rpm I need to fit some form of back gear ( suggestions ideas welcome) it’s been lots of fun and I’ve learnt a lot so far , still some way to go though but it works reasonably well . I also had a lucky find as someone chucked a good bench drill in a skip ten minutes work all working ! One mans rubbish and all that please let me know what you think.

Hi all just so as to clear the confusion I have created. the spindle gear is 34t and I believe to be MOD 1.25 it is not at its optimal position in relation to the 18t tumble gear I have decided to create a new tumble lever , it will be a v shape with the tumble idle gears fitted on opposite sides with a 34t gear on the tumble spindle so going back to 1-1 ratio I hope!!!!!

Thanks to everyone for offering advise can I ask could I just change the tumbler output gear .

I see your point ,yes ok I will give that a go probably should have gone that way instead of being lazy and assuming the 34t gear would work. I still need to find some gears at a very small cost as this project has a cash limit if it climbs to much I may as well bought a better lathe !!!

Hi unfortunately it's too close to the hole that's already there ,I will need to rethink this as it appears not as simple as just gearing it down .

Before fitting the ML5 headstock I took lots of measurements it all lines up as it should 3 1/2" centre hight I tried using the existing pre drilled hole at the back of the headstock to locate the tumble reverse this is set to low which requires the 34t gear on the spindle so as you say it needs re thinking. As the lathe came minus a headstock I thought this would be a good upgrade?

Do you think that I may have just created trouble when I could of just used a banjo setup without the tumble reverse option

Hi all I have checked the tumble gears it's off a ML7 and they are 20t and 25t am I correct in thinking I only need to change the 20t gear

I believe the tumble output gear is 21t but I will check so if I change that to a 34t it will correct the problem.

hi all could someone help me with a problem I have on my ML 4/5 hybrid I have now fitted a tumble reverse but it is in a lower position than on the original headstock ,so I have had to fit a larger gear to the spindle instead of 30tpi it's 34 tpi what affect will this have on my overall gearing .

Hi I should have made it clear the headstock is off a ML5 capstan lathe there is also a cut off slide.

hi anyone who fancies upgrading there ML2/3/4 there is a complete headstock on eBay I am in the process myself and it is fairly straightforward.

I'm afraid the cost is too much as I'm trying to only invest time and not loads of money.

Hi all just fitted a tumble reverse to the headstock, the position of the pre drilled hole means it's set slightly lower than normal so I need to fit a bigger gear could anyone measure a couple of myford gears say 30 to 38 the diameter would give me the information to make the right choice as I don't have the gears
