Thread: Myford S7 rebuild - a few questions!
15/12/2016 08:22:55

I was quite chuffed with the price we agreed and even happier when i viewed the lathe, quite a result.I just need to decide what to do with the remaining pieces once its all built back up, i may sell to fund the mill i keep promising myself!

So its safe to assume that these collets are not manufactured anymore? is it worth the hassle to machine a few or should i sell the chuck and purchase something a bit more up to date?

Good evening All!

Recently purchased a second super 7 minus a few bits (leadscrew, most gears,saddle/apron) for the bargain price of £275 with the vision of replacing my old sight glass headstock with the more modern one.

The bed is actually in much better condition than my current one so i have stripped the motorising assembly off so i can give it all some much needed love and eventually a repaint, i have left the headstock in place as i see no need to remove it unless anyone would advise otherwise for any reason?

I assume that my screw cutting gearbox can just be taken from my old and bolted straight onto the bed with its leadscrew and carriers?

while i have it stripped is there anything worth replacing to save mucking around at a later date?

It also came with a Myford cut off slide and lever collet holder, I don't see the cut off slide being much use to me and after some research i am astonished at the price of the MA99E collets!....£20-30 a piece...why!?

Muzzer,

I much prefer the idea of a scrubber pad over wire wool which i imagine will break apart and get everywhere, especially where you don't want it to be!

I am not looking for a concours machine to stare at but it would be nice to have a machine with a bit more shine - I am sure that if you have a good looking machine you are more likely to give it a good clean after every session.

Thank you for the advice!

img_1716.jpgSillyOldDuffer,

Random hobby as it may be, your picture caught my attention due to the name on the drain.....

I picked these up a few years ago at a well known local "antiques" shop for £8 .....being produced in Bitton and these still having Brunel calibration stickers (Bristol) I would imagine they are one and the same.

Is it wise to use something abrasive on the bed though? Do you use oil aswell?

Good evening all,

I see some pictures floating around on the forum of some immaculate looking lathes with all metalwork looking bright and shiny, I am aware a lot of this is good care but being the owner of a rather mature myford super 7 that has had many owners i would love to know if there are any tips in bringing the brown patina on the bed and slides back to a bright finish without damaging the lathe.

I understand some people use wire wool but there must be a more gentle method!?

Thank you for the ideas, there seems to be a few ways to complete this one.

I may have a go on some scrap with the D bit and see what results i acheive-i assume if it tapered the bore it would be larger near the bottom?

The end mill sounds like a good option too,Would it produce a clean cut/bore for the complete 34MM depth?I am not sure how long the working end of the bit is.

Yes it will be done in the lathe,So i will be bolting the slot drill into the tool holder and setting at say 5 degrees?

Thank you for the help so far!

Good evening all,

Just playing around with my beginner project- a unit steam engine and would like some advice on boring for the cylinder.

The instructions say that it should be drilled 19/64 and bored/flat bottom drilled before finishing 5/16 with a reamer- is there a small enough boring tool available to save me having to modify a drill with my awfull grinding skills?!

im hoping the answer is completely obvious as my searches for small boring tools has come up empty!-piston size is .3125

any advice is massively appreciated and hello to you all!

Matty
