Thread: Alternative to PC based Cnc controllers
10/01/2017 23:44:32

John, no need to be sorry mate, everyone's views are very important and I myself started designing these after having too many issues with PC based controllers and I might have my own point of view but also need to have everyone's take on this.

If you can please spare a couple of minutes and share what you think would be a good price point for the units and also what you like and dislike about the units the this can really help us understand what you as a user want so that we can keep improving the designs.

John,

All controllers upto 3 axis have been released and only the 4th and 5th axis versions are due for release this month.

Yes you can connect an encoder with A,B and Z singlas on the spindle for threading. Please note that an encoder is only required for threading.

The reason we have a separate monitor and keyboard is that the user has the choice to use any type and in case of any replacement the users can replace the screen or keyboard themselves.

We started making PC independent CNC controllers here in Australia and also have online documentation. We have Lathe, Mill and Plasma versions with up to 5 axis control.

Hi All,

Been reading everyones comments and its such a great feedback.

Keeping things simple has been the key issue and also getting rid of the computer based OS. I have gone through the same issues while making the CNC machines for hobby.

And thats why I started making a non OS controller that is only made to run a CNC machine. Having custom built hardware means full control of hardware design and custom software that for the hardware.

I will appreciate everyones views and comments as I would like to keep adding more features to the design.

John, I can understand what you mean and appreciate the great feedback.

At the moment its been tough to work fulltime as a programmer and keep working on MASSO, I have been trying to push more monthly sales so that more time goes into MASSO.

As you just mentioned, standardizing the hardware was one of the key requirements and we have tried to address this issues as much as we could in our design with all standardized hardware on one board.

You might be able to give some great feedback in regards to pricing, some of my clients have been saying that if we go for a subscription model then it will be better. Basically sell the units at half or even less cost £150 - £200 and then have a £15 monthly subscription that will include free updates. What do you think about this from clients point of view?

Thanks for you time

John,

Thanks for such a detailed email and also for sharing your experience.

For me this CNC journey started while making CNC machines in my garage just for fun and while doing that I used PC based systems which gave me a lot of problem. So being a programmer I started making my own system mainly for fun and over time people started asking me if they can have the units.

We are stiff very new to this industry and rather than business its more of a hobby thing and we try to make things as people ask us. I do understand that simple things like wizards could have be called something else but its what mainly people told us in meetups or at maker spaces.

John and Nigel,

  • The 4th & 5th axis units share the same hardware and in fact we only have one hardware model. The only difference is in the softwares and the software can be changed or updated anytime by simply putting a new update file on the USB pen drive.
  • The 4th & 5th axis softwares are being tested at the moment and will be released in about 4-8 weeks, we are currently a bit busy with kickstarter and will be back at the new releases soon.
  • Regarding the new OS: That's the beauty of this design, we actually don't run these on any OS, the entire system software has been designed to only be a CNC controllers. We have made the looks a bit like a PC software to make it easy for users. There is noting to setup on the system such as drivers or installing software, we provide one software file and that one file itself is everything including all the motion and graphics software.
  • Currently we are doing a kickstarter project and we are offering units on discounts plus if there is a distributor interested in UK then we will be happy to provide the units in UK through them.

Nigel,

You can have a look at this controller. This unit has all the hardware built in and you wont even need a PC or motion cards.

Hi

Regarding the questions about MASSO, please see the below:

  1. Yes the system will need a monitor and keyboard and it was designed this way so that if any of these gets damaged then the user can easily change them, whereas if all that was integrated then its hard to fix.
  2. All the required electronics for inputs and motor driver PULSE & DIRECTION signals are built in the system and you wont need anything else such as motion cards.
  3. On the inputs there are individual 4 pin optocouplers in sockets and if damaged they can be replaced. For outputs if the driver chip is damaged then definitely is has to be resoldered.
  4. http://www.hindtechnology.com/wp-content/uploads/Documentation/Mill/Replace%20Opto.png
  5. Closed loop servo or stepper drives can also work with the unit and we will also be releasing a software update that will monitor each drives alarm signal and stop the machine and display the reason of alarm on screen.
