Bit of a long shot here but... would anyone on here have the dimensions of the myford ml3 topslide screw and the dimensions of the base that the topslide sits on. Or indeed where I could find them . A guy has offered to have a go at making them for me .

If the 4 chuck is on the Colchester which I hope it is that's the way I'll try and do it . I'm also in talks with a local smiddy just now . I'd rather it was done right than a bodge job by me .

No need to limit yourself to steel Sean - you can buy pieces of cast iron too.

Norman

Would cast iron be easier Norman

Ah...right ,it'll be a bit crude but i'm certainly no expert on a lathe wink.

Been trying to sort out the pulley drive system today .. didn't go too well ,bit more involved than i first thought ...

Thanks Thor

I'm looking for material suited for making a tool post . i can't find a topslide and base for love nor money so it's been suggested that i use a steel block to fill in the space the topslide and the topslide base would take ... I'm going to try this and see how i get on . Would any old piece of steel made to the correct dimensions do . I'll be working out of the yard so i'll have access to their big Colchester lathe i believe it is ,it also has a vertical slide so maybe i could use that to true up two faces of the block ... That's my plan anyways ,i'd appreciate any feedback on my plans ....

Made a pulley today for the little ml3 ,turned out quite good I'd say . Mini moto wheel bearings came in handy .

Any tips on squaring up the cross carrage on the ml3 ,something doesn't seem right ,I have the gib at the back of the ways . It shouldn't make any difference should it .

I'm watching a ml7 topslide complete with the swivel base (what is this part called) Got some measurements bolt centers are 100mm the dowel is 19mm . I'm sure this can work unless the final tool height will be different.

I have the materials and a little bit of know how lol . I got some flat belts of some washing machinesat the local recycling center and a couple of motors ,toying with the idea of making a tool bit grinder .

It's in very good condition that's for sure ,not convinced the screw is meant for this cross slide ,it's a bit lose at the handle end where it goes through the casting ,could be my first item to make if I ever get up and running . Still have the canter mount for the motor to make yet ... any ideas ?

At first I was disappointed but now I've had a wee think about it I can maybe do something with it . There are no screw hole on the cross slide which is strange ,I'm assuming the half nut is what locks the cross slide? Would using one of the the original screw holes (ie..the one closest to the chuck ) on the Apron

Will do Michael, I have a couple of ideas involving two dowels in the middle ,two flush fitting screws outside of the dowels . There's a local guy who has a small machine shop, I might ask if he would be willing to do it .

Cross slide arrived today, guess what ... it fits the ways properly but there's no visual way for it to fit to the Apron . When I placed the Apron in place ,the two parts come together as they should but don't match up if you know what I mean . Check out my album. Just about had it with this for now . Should have payed more attention to the photos that were sent .

Me ....again !!!

If I connect the motor I have that has a 2" pulley directly to the lathe and ingage the back gear can anyone tell me if that will be too much . Motor spins at 1450rpm . Think I know what the reply will be .... but I'm curious.
