Thread: Tuscan motor .55kw induction motor
15/04/2017 13:32:04
Great to here ,I doubt I'd be running my lathe all day. I think it's worth a go at least. The reasons I want to down grade from the 1.5hp motor I'm running is wear and tare plus the bigger motor is very hard on the pocket. ..ie electric, I've noticed a big hike in our bill .

It's been a while peeps . Ive aquired a Tusan motor from a filling station pump ,it's totally inclosed as in there's no cooling fins like on the motor I'm using just now . I will add photos to my albums and maybe you can let me know if it's suitable to prolonged running . Anyone know what RTO 1HR might mean ,hope it doesn't mean max running time is 1hr ?.

Thread: Centec 2 horizontal mill
01/03/2017 19:23:06

Just a wee update on The Centec 2 mill . I was talking to a friend that's working where the mill is ,and he was saying the boss man has asked his fitter if he needed any parts of the mill if not then it's mind for the taking . I have spoken to the fitter previously (unknown to his boss) and he said he didn't want anything off it . wink

On a side note .... They think the Centec 2 is just a plane old keyway cutter .....who am I to disagree if you get my drift wink 2

Thread: Planning a power hacksaw build

Thanks Mick will do,just fancy making one just now .

I'm not wanting to have a pulley system to reduce gearing ,space in my shed is at a premium the least amount of room the hacksaw takes up the better for me .

Funny you should mention a wiper motor ,I was considering one of those . How would you recommend powering it ?

Morning, as title says I'm planning on building a power hacksaw . I'm not sure what kind of motor to use ,dc/ac low rpm probably in the 120 rpm range or a little more and direct drive . . I'm hoping to make the saw as compact as possible.

Any thought . This will be a scavenged and used parts build .

Metric. I see metric.

Can't get me head round this imperial stuff. I have spent my entire working life in engineering (30 years so far). Only time I ever got to do imperial was playing with aeroplanes for 5 years. I shall shut up further on this, as my views on people persisting with imperial will cause this thread to degenerate.

Regards

Richard

My machine IS imperial ....

Possibly looking as expensive as £20 for 400mm with a flange nut from China. If you search, can probably get a ballscrew & nut for no more than £30. I'm a tight-wad, but it seems not worth machining yourself at these prices.

Regards,

Richard.

Why do you say It's not worth it? ...The whole point of me buying this lathe is to use and gain experience .Yeh i could go and buy ,but why when i have the machine to do ,the material which didn't cost me a penny . If it doesn't work out I'll keep trying I've plenty of time and material ..... Oh .... and I'm a Scot thats another reason wink

Thread: Quality digital vernier calipers
12/02/2017 18:36:24

If my memory serves me right (which i doubt) the picture on the box on the ebay link is wrong ,the calipers should be pointing up to the top left corner instead of bottom left .

Chris I'd like to take you up on the offer of your surplus threaded bar if it'll fit my needs ,can't remember off hand what tpi mine is but I'll let you know tonight .
I'd still like to make my own LS if Chris's one is the same as mine I'll have a backup . I'm gaining confidence every time I cut a thread . I finally finished my new backing plate on Sunday gor my 4 jaw ,the 1 3/4 " 7tpi was perfect as was the register .

I'm toying withe making a new 5/8 od crosslide feed screw . Is this possible to do by just holding in chuck and live centre on the tailstock without any other kind of support .I'm worried about the part having push off. ..ie..steady rest . The feedscrew is about 12" . I'm only planning the thead part of the FS and then joining the none thread part to the new FS if that makes sense at all .
