In my opinion it's not possible to buy what you want, there is only one option to build one either yourself or have one made. If you do it yourself its possible to have something amazing for very little cost. I built this for £3200, including the concrete slab. Timber is not expensive if you spend time shopping round and using the internet. The only not new materials i used were the windows and doors (£20 each off facebook or gumtree). 4x2 frame, OSB board all over, breathable membrane all over, steel roof, 100mm insulation everywhere, and clear tanalised cladding to make it look nice. cheap but good .... best of both worlds i hope

Mine is 1500cc based on a 1982 suzuki GSX, with bigger valves and cams, billet auto gearbox, slider type clutch, and with nitrous oxide as the power adder.

It makes 400hp at the rear wheel, does 0-60 in less than one second, 155mph in 4.4seconds and the quarter mile in 7.1 seconds at 186mph.

I do know Bob very well, drag bike racing is too small of a world not to know Bob or Pete Davies. I would love to see pics of your bike if you can find them. It was Bob that showed me how to Bronze weld before i built that frame.

He's just retired from racing (and work!) and his bike is up for sale...here it is. It's entirely built in his workshop on manual machines - cylinder head, frame, bodywork, the lot. It's 1700cc, supercharged and running on methanol.

All i can say Dave - is there's a lot of days involved. And i wouldn't disagree at all - a part a day if your lucky is the going rate for me too.

Took 18 months to build, maybe 20hours a week on top of my day job.

Thread: VFD conversion and getting a 110v supply for power feed

Well, after a great deal of staring and continuity testes i've managed to not just get the power feed working off 240v single phase, but the lamp and every single contactor and button on the mill too. And with ONE simple wire change ..... move the wire on the transformer from 415v to 220v. and thats it.

I think they designed it to be easy to convert from three to single phase. saves any extra costs.

Well happy with that now, and i'll feed the VFD off the main motor contactor so the emergency stop kills that as well as the power feed.

Thanks for the replies folks. And Joe - I checked another picture and it does indeed say 220v. I missed that, and that makes sense as it's currently wired L1 and L2 to 0v and 415v.

Hoping someone can advise ...

In the cabinet of my bridgeport clone, there is a transformer that uses 2 phases (L1 and L2 in )and has 110v an 24v out (power feed and work light). can i simply connect live and neutral single phase to those so the power feed etc still work while the VFD runs the main motor?

The £100 deckel has bits missing. I need a mill i can just use straight away, i'm not into doing machines up beyond tramming and a lick of paint maybe! Theres a deckel fp2 on there too, i'm hopefully going to look at it next week. I'm very limited in height so cannot get a turret type mill, the deckel or similar look perfect but i've not actually seen one in the flesh.

I just finished this today, it's a fixture/table for doing jobs like boring crankcase mouths, and cylinder head stuff ... no idea what just yet. If i do get a deckel type mill this would be a waste of time! hey ho.

Phil, take a look at the Warco Bridgeport clone. I have not seen one in the flesh but someone on an old bike forum I use bought one due to it being lower than a Bridgeport. He was restricted in garage height to accommodate machinery for his model traction engine. He bought a little used second hand machine.

I've just been on their site and had a look, the height will be very close but is a possibility. The price is twice what i could afford new.... but i'll keep looking. I have overcome the particular problem with the column being out on my mill, so it's at least one step closer to being acceptable!

The old type round ram Bridgeport is 1.9 m high with the M head, a couple of inches more if converted to take the J head so one of those might go in. Finding a decent one is another matter tho'. I do know of one thats been refurbed and has a J head. Even with the pancake motor a modern one si 2.2 m high so definitely too high.

Horizontal mills like the Adcock Shipley 2 series or Harrison with a Bridgeport head on the overarm work pretty well and are somewhat lower. Occasionally pop up on E-Bay et al but conversion is not silly work to do. Conventional vertical head on a horizontal is much lower but I'd hate to be without a quill feed.

I did think about converting the head so the motor is slung from the underside of the head rather than the top, but i'm not sure it could be done and it's still a mission in itself. I could drill a hole up through the ceiling for the motor to pop up into my sisters living room, it would come up just behind the TV lol

If you wanna know how quick it is - well it does 0-60 in less than one second, 150mph in 4 seconds and the quarter mile in 7.2 seconds at 181mph. The bikes based on a 1981 Suzuki GSX1100 but is now 1500cc, and i put a fair bit of nitrous oxide through it to make it faster. The frame and pretty much everything is home made. I best shut up cos i could go on ....
