Thread: Minnie traction engine build
25/06/2019 14:53:15

Hi everyone

I'm starting on my first ever proper build so please be patient if I have any silly questions. I've owned my lathe a little John mk2 for about 3 or 4 years now, a part from doing odd jobs etc I haven't really built anything like this before, so I'm looking forward to this adventure.

I have brought the casting and all the instructions/Manuel and plans, book and everything I need for the build a "Minnie traction engine", the boiler has already been made and has a test certificate for it but I've stumbled at the first hurdle I've been trying to figure out how to fit the horn plates to it would anyone have any suggestions? (Please look in my album) Is it okay to drill through the stays and tap them so they can be bolted on?

Many thanks

George

Thread: Horizontal mill cutter
18/06/2019 21:29:19

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all your help I've learnt a lot today. I had a very interesting conversation with RobCox earlier this evening, I gave him the information of my 3 phase converter which he has told be is to small for my mill and that's the reason it's tripping all the time, hopefully by changing my motor to my spare 1hp motor and getting a larger 3phase converter will hopefully solve 1 of issues I have. The other having the cutters sharpened he is also able to help with too so a big thank you to Rob for all your help and advise and everyone else's input too. Once I have everything changed I let you know how it's running

Hi everyone

The majority of the cutters I have a 2 1/2 to 3 inch diameter and 1/4 inch ish , apart from one which is 1" thick which I couldn't use I couldn't imagine using a slab cutter on my mill? I've put someone pictures in my album of almost all my cutters I have and tried.

Thank you for the continued help

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some words of wisdom from forum members please, I have a Ajax aj8 horizontal milling machine which I've not had for very long, I have a few issues with it I'm trying to sort out, a friend gave me several cutters to get me going, I think the cutters are blunt/dulled and I would like to have them sharpened would anyone know where I could get them sharpened at a sensible price? or would a kind member here be able to help sharpen them for me for a donation

The other issue I have is when I got the mill is it didn't have a electric motor with it so ive fitted a 1/2 hp 3phase motor and converter I had in my workshop, the motor spindle has a 1" pulley on it going to the 7" spindle/arbor pulley. I've been trying to cut a 20mm slot in BMS 50×50 square bar to make myself some qctp's for my lathe, (the first one took me about a week to do between work and family commitments) what I'm finding is either the cutters won't cut or if I take a cut deeper than 3 to 5 tho it trips the 3 phase converter, I have 2 identical converters and have tried both with the same result (tripping out) the cutters I'm using are HHS 2mm width up to 1/2" I haven't had any problems with slitting saws. Would I need a bigger motor like 1 hp or would this be to big for my mill?

Any help and advice would be appreciated

Thread: What lathe is this ? Grimshaw
28/03/2019 14:03:35

Hi everyone

My neighbour has just found his great Grandad's lathe and would like to know if I can do it up /clean it up?

Would anyone know about these little lathes? The only name on it is GRIMSHAW and it's made of brass I've looked on the interweb but couldn't find much information so I'm putting it to the collective

I've put some pictures in my album as I'm not sure how to put them in the post here. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks in advance

Hi there

From one raglan LJ mk2 owner to another I know I'd have to take a seriously deep cut before my 1/2hp single phase motor would start to labour and I've never stall it, I'd check your motor first sounds like you might have an issue? these lathes are very powerful for their size

Hi
It could be a Halifax,Sears, all copies of the atlas lathe. I used to own one a few years ago very nice lathes to operate. Your looks like you have a few items missing tho?

Thread: Holding work on the cross slide
22/12/2018 10:15:11
Hi Robin,
When I did my first basic Line boring on a lathe I managed to clamp a angle plate to the cross slide T slot and then clamp the work to the angle plate running a homemade boring bar between chuck and tail stock. Would this be an option for you? I did put a short clip on you tube

Thread: Coolant pipe seals
10/11/2018 14:30:20
Hi Neil,
I found in my search that you were not far off right, instead of plastic they were original using rubber washer followed by a short brass/copper sleeve that sat in a recess allowing it to be clamped up but also then be flexible my issue is the pipe that goes inside has been warn and rounded up. Trying to mount this in the chuck and turn this parrel is going to be fun 🤔 but my first try was a rubber grommet and a couple of thick washers so far it seems to have worked so keeping my fingers cross for now 🤞
Many thanks again to the collective knowledge of the forum

Well today I've been out and about to my local plumbers and electricians etc but still no luck trying to get hold of this seal, I've searched on the internet with no luck either. I've even tired contacting myford via email and phoning but had no reply? Surely their must be a company that stock a seal

Hi Bear,
Thank you for your input not a great help as the elbow joint has to be flexible but the the link would be very useful when I need to solder copper pipe and she did a very good tidy job too.

Hi
I've put a picture in my gallery and I've just measured the diameter of where the pipe goes into the elbow and it is roughly half inch. The rubber seal looks like it's supposed to pass partly through the clamping nut and squashed into place but leaving the elbow joint partly flexible.
I'm not having much joy putting pictures on here but their is one in my album

Hi everyone,

I have recently brought a coolant pipe (epay) for my lathe, so I can replace the leaking plastic thing I have. I need to replace the seals on the elbow joints but for the life of me i can't seem to find any where to buy them?

Would any one be able to offer any help please?

Hi Bill,
Your not the only one having problems with the messaging system. I've tried several times to enquire about items most recent the raglan 5 for sale and only had one reply out of several messages sent so have given up trying
