Thread: Myford Super 7 and ER40 collet chuck
20/06/2019 17:51:04

I have an er40 chuck for my Boxford which isn't really any bigger than a myford so I don't think it would be too big. In fact the collet chuck is probably smaller and lighter than a bog standard 3 jaw. I stumped up the extra for the er40 for the same reasons of extra capacity. I think it's worth it, 1 inch is a very common size used in our hobby, I'm almost certain I would have regretted it had I gone for the Er32 size.

Hi welcome. That's kinda how I got into engineering too. Air rifles.

Thread: Lathe Speed - What am I missing out on?
18/06/2019 22:59:45

Personally I don't worry about speeds too much. I just take a cut and kinda use my instincts to get a feel for how it's cutting and adjust accordingly. The sound and heat generated are a good indicator too. I can usually get a good finish on most materials.

Thread: Is this cheap type of VFD worth buying?
18/06/2019 22:17:03

I'm not against buying Chinese products in the slightest. In my day job I purchase stock from China on a regular basis. I know from experience Chinese made products vary in quality from God awful to excellent. Which is why I specifically said low end electronics.

Don't even get me started on apple. Their £1000 "high end" phone costs about £300 to produce.

18/06/2019 20:43:06

I wouldn't go Chinese on an inverter. In my experience low end Chinese electricals can be very poor quality indeed and even worse can be dangerous. I would second what Clive said. I have an invertek drive which is made in Wales! One of the reasons I went for the invertek other than supporting UK manufacturing is that I would have English speaking customer service on the doorstep or at the other end of the phone. I bought mine from inverter drive supermarket and can confirm they are a good company to deal with.

You could try annealing them. Heat them up and let them cool as slowly as possible.

Thread: Cheap Carbide Lathe Tools

I'd go for something like these in the same price bracket. The quality isn't half bad. For the price they are hard to beat.

The cheap ones I've had aren't very hard they are no harder than say a high tensile steel bolt.

I never got on with the brazed carbide tools. Honestly I think they are rubbish. I get much better results with both HSS and indexable carbide.

Thread: Supply of machines

I belive the vm30 doesn't have fine feed so be careful not to overlook that. Have you looked at the warco secondhand section? They nearly always have VMC Mills for sale.

I noticed the same when I was looking for my mini lathe and its not just machinery, accessories seem to be OOS too.

I ordered a lathe at the Doncaster show from Chester. I specifically asked the guy at the stand if it was in stock ready for dispatch because it was showing OOS on their website. Yes he replied, you can even choose a delivery day. With that I made a payment expecting delivery in a couple of days. I later got a call from them saying it was going to be a week late because of staff shortage. sad I'm pretty sure they never had any stock and where just pre selling. I don't like being lied to so I cancelled.

Thread: Chinese carbide inserts.

I've never had a problem with them. I don't think they are as good as the top brands but then what do you expect at about 10th of the price?

Thread: Mini Lathe footprint dimensions and will it slide
14/06/2019 10:22:16

I've just measured mine for you. The footprint of the drip tray is 220mm x 755mm. If you add the length of all the overhanging parts like the hand wheels and have the tailstock advanced all the way to the right it measures approx 320mm x 840mm. Hope that helps.

Mine is an amadeal cj18a which I believe is an 14 inch machine.

Could you use some L shaped brackets to mount it under or above the table?

Thread: Can We Be Too Good For Our Own Good - sometimes|?
12/06/2019 18:09:00

A mate of mine used to have a Yamaha DT125 which had problems seizing up. The first time the engine seized he fixed it himself, new piston, new rings and gaskets. It lasted about a week before it seized up again. This time he took it to a garage. new piston, new rings, new gaskets and a wad of cash. About a week passed before it seized up again. He was starting to get a bit disheartened and was thinking of selling it so I told him I would take a look. Now i'm no mechanic but it took me about 10 minutes to discover a crack in the head letting water into the cylinder. sad

Thread: C1 lathe opinions
10/06/2019 21:04:20

I have just sold mine. I bought it to use indoors but I was never really happy with its capabilities. It was OK on brass and aluminium but it struggled a bit with steel. I am much happier with the mini lathe I replaced it with.

Thread: Where is best to buy??

What astonishes me is that Zoro offers genuinely free postage on ebay

My last two purchases have cost me £2.00 and £1.61 respectively.

Each was delivered in a large MailLite envelope, via ParcelForce 48

Either they have a very special arrangement, or they treat small orders as a 'loss leader'

MichaelG.

Most delivery companies offer subscription type service where you pay a fixed amount per year, you can then send as many parcels as you like for no further cost. These services usually cost thousands so are no viable for small businesses but for large businesses sending many thousands of parcels they are very cost effective.

I might be being a bit radical here but you could always send them back for a refund or exchange?

Thread: Model aircraft pilots angry over drone laws
07/06/2019 11:45:28

I dont fly drones or planes but I hate this ban or restrict everything mentality we now seem to have, it really annoys me. angry I have several hobbies that are always being attacked by some do-gooder, I enjoy shooting, metal detecting and knife making all of which have been restricted in recent years. Our freedoms are being erroded bit by bit.

Thread: Ebay 'photos'
07/06/2019 10:49:47

I know what you mean, there is a lathe on there now with about 4-5 grainy photos which seem to have been taken using some aerial photography technique. face 16 Do these sellers not realise that good photos will earn them more money?
