I'm running Linux Mint 13 Maya at the moment and DraftSight won't launch, however a friend is sending me a disc with the latest Ubuntu so I'll see how that works out.

John

Did you get any error messages when installing Draftsight? It could be that there is a dependency issue.

Even though v.13 is still supported it's probably worth upgrading to the latest version of Linux Mint. You can download all the latest versions here. I'm using the 64 bit Cinnamon version with no problems.

Russell.

No error messages, it installed without any problems except it won't launch, it's appears in the 'Package Manager' as 457MB installed and also in the 'Applications' list.

I'll have a go when the Ubuntu disc arrives as I've encountered another little problem that might not let me use the link that you have kindly provided.

Thread: .....So who has the motor?
29/05/2016 08:43:28

Probably been fitted to an old Singer sewing machine somewhere.

It's a fantastic bit of luck though even without the motor.

As an old duffer close to 70 I am intrigued by those that have the nouse to produce cad drawings in 2D/3D; I am looking at getting into this just for my own interest, not for CNC machining etc... not interest in that depth of hobbying, just really want to produce simple stuff that can rotate & look inside of. I did start a course at college many years ago on AutoCAD... #1 I think... face 20... shows how long ago that was, but I lost interest once it started telling me to move polar vectors / switch layers,

I'm a few years past you and I've worked on CAD for quite a while, 5 years full time on Medusa CAD and about 18 years Autocad and Inventor and I've never heard of 'polar vectors' and would bet none of the lads I worked with on mechanical design would have either, as regards 'layers', for the the work we did which would be similar to the drawings many model makers would do, special purpose precision machines, we didn't use layers either, the lads in the Civil engineering office did, different layers for building foundations, walls, services etc, so don't let it put you off, it's not dead easy to start with, plenty of time spent staring at the screen wondering which icon to click but you should get there.

Thank you all for your replies, it looks like I'll be with LibreCAD to start with, I eventually managed to download DraftSight after a few attempts, however although it appears as an 457MB installed program in the 'Package Manager' and is listed in the 'Applications' window it won't launch so I can't do anything with it.

Thanks for that John, I've just looked and found I have LibreCAD already installed, I just hadn't looked hard enough, I'll have a go at it.

I have a copy of Autodesk Inventor on an old XP machine, however as I'm now using Linux on my main PC I thought I would try DraftSight, I went on the website and chose what was listed as a free download, it downloaded but when I went to install it found it had been put in the Package Manager 'Graphics (non free)' section, has anyone else had this problem, if it is a problem at all?

Thanks

Thread: Borax suppliers??
25/05/2016 15:10:11

I know the Malc did say not from the Internet, but to give an idea of the prices, I bought from this place last year

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/bioaquatek/?_dmd=2&_nkw=borax

and they charge £5.95 kg free p & p, it's named '20 Mule Team Borax' after the mule team that used to haul it out from Death Valley which as Muzzer said is in the Mojave Desert

They want you to change because they want to stop supporting Win7 in terms of security patches etc at some point. (And there may be more nefarious reasons too.)

Windows 7 mainstream support stopped last year but extended support will go on to 2020.

I find Rocol RTD very good especially when drilling and tapping stainless steel, I have a tub of tallow in the workshop but I've found it's getting harder to source locally now that plumbers aren't wiping lead joints.

Thread: ML7 clutch alternative
10/05/2016 19:33:27

Hi John,

I don't know about old jaguar inverters but new ones certainly don't have this limitation as long as the drive is stopped and started via an enable signal to the drive. The drive stays powered up all the time - it just gets a stop, fwd / rev signal, doesn't matter how many times.

Switching the power feed to the drive as a control method is a big no no.

I've got an old ML7 with a Lenze (German) drive it's not a problem, i'm crap at measuring and will stop start many times per min - I can even switch from full speed (85hz - 2600rpm 2 pole motor) to reverse on the go no dramas. (except when the chuck fell off : (

Cheers

Simon

I've only just obtained a manual for the Jaguar Cub in the last couple of days, I thought I'd better get one after making statements and have to apologise for any wrong info' I gave, I don't know where I got the 20 secs from but the manual states you can do 10 starts per hour max by switching off and on the supply, and 10 starts per minute using the electronic input terminals, so it would be very unlikely using the latter system that anyone would exceed the limit.

So comments from both yourself and Frank Brown were basically correct,

Thanks

It may not be only single phase motors that can be affected by repeated start/stop usage, my Myford S7 has a 3ph motor driven by an old Jaguar Cub inverter, I don't have a manual for it but I read one about 20 years ago when I installed it, and if I recall correctly there is a minimum time you are supposed to wait between stops and starts, I think it was about 20secs which can be twice the time taken for a quick look at the work.

Perhaps more modern inverters can cope better.

This is me on the right of the picture in around the early 1960's at Mullard Ltd casting a similar alloy to Nimonic with an induction furnace, I think it was around 10KW, not quite sure of the frequency but it wiped out the BBC Light programme when running.

Thread: How are people finding Windows 10?
19/04/2016 16:07:07
Posted by Clive Hartland on 19/04/2016 15:16:20:

Re my post about the Windows live mail re-loading emails from the deleted file, TalkTalk found that one of the Servers was faulty and has now replaced it so all is well again.

Clive

I had something similar on my Linux PC running Thunderbird Mail, I'm with Sky but the mail server is Yahoo, I logged on last year and the server proceeded to download every email I had ever received, it took about an hour, Yahoo didn't want to know and said it must be my PC at fault, I logged into the server and deleted everything I could find in the hope that it doesn't happen again.

Just been looking at the Chronos website and the photos of these show them as as they would be used on a front toolholder, has anyone used them on a Myford S7 rear toolpost, will the heights etc be OK?

Thanks

Thread: 'Modifications' banned

Insurance Co's also seem very interested in modifications, after reading an article on the web about it I rang my Insurer, Liverpool Victoria, I now have an addition to my policy listing 'reversing sensors' as a modification even though they were fitted by the main agent before the car had even been on the road.

Thread: Bridge Rectifiers

So have I got the wrong bridge rectifier and is it not switching fully? rather than a 200v maximum should I have got one with a 50v maximum. I don't understand rectifiers.

That voltage rating is fine, I often use 1N4007 rectifier diodes which are 1000V and 1A rating for low voltage circuits  but with lower current than yours.
