Thread: Unknown Micrometer make
04/05/2021 09:00:00

0 to 1/2" micrometers are still available, I have two. One Moore and Wright and a more recent one 0 to 0.600" of unknown make. They where very useful in my die milling days where access was needed and a 0 to 1 " was to big.

Thread: MIlling cutter pulling out of collet
04/05/2021 08:53:43
Posted by mgnbuk on 04/05/2021 08:16:33:

6 out of the 7 CNC milling machines at work have "bites" out of the tables due to milling cutters working out of ER collet chucks - and that is machining graphite, not metals & we have bench mounted ISO 40 toolholders to get a good hold on the tools to tighten the collet nuts with the correct spanners. The machines do have a bit more power available, but against that most CNC operators are animals when it comes to tightening things - if all else fails, use a 3 foot pipe on the spanner !

Don't seem to have pull out issues with sidelock or Clarkson holders.

Nigel B.

My Bridgeport has suffered in the past from a previous "Sloppy Operator" Evidence of cutter pull down on the table and marks on the table from drill points. I have large and small Clarkson chucks and lots of threaded shank cutters to ensure that I do not add to the damage.

Thread: New member from Ireland

Welcome along Steve, sounds like your future is laid out. I get over to Ireland a couple of times a year but nearly always to the north. The motorcycle road racing is the pull for me.

Thread: What odd grease?
29/04/2021 22:29:03

Type 0 semi liquid grease as used in commercial vehicle and agricultural chassis lubrication systems. I repair a bit of farm equipment and scrounge the odd litre for my vintage bike gearbox.

Thread: Importing a power table feed
28/04/2021 19:40:12

Today I contacted one of the sellers claiming UK stock but still had item location shown as Switzerland.

The reply was, It is UK stock and no duty or taxes to pay. If I want one order soon. I will place the order in a few days time and post the results on here.

26/04/2021 19:32:12

Thanks for all the replies, I could afford a few extra pounds but it is the uncertainty that worries me. My power feed has been out of use for a while so not an essential replacement, just a luxury. Good point re the 220 volts on limit switches, my Bridgeport still has the 110 volt available on the transformer. I will ponder the decision.

26/04/2021 11:15:16

I am looking at replacing the power table feed on my Bridgeport. A lot on eBay at around £136. Some claim UK stock but all seem to be in Switzerland. Does the £136 come under the duty threshold ? I seem to recall reading that charges are made over £137. The items all seem to be very cheap for what you get and certainly cheaper than a repair to the old unit.

Thread: Calling all Colchester Bantam owners.

Yes Alan Millyard is the name I was trying to remember, brain is not what it was since the stroke last year.

Thread: Parting off 25mm copper
25/04/2021 19:08:14

Some grades of copper are really difficult to machine/part off. The hard drawn ones being the worst (HDHC hard drawn)

In my working years I operated spark erosion machines and made a lot of copper electrodes. 90% of them in free cutting copper, I think sulpher was added to the copper.

I see that like me motorcycles are your interest, you have no doubt heard about the exploits of Alan Ruddyard ? and his very special bikes. I believe he uses a Bantam.

Thread: Machining titanium.
25/04/2021 10:44:53

I have limited experience of machining titanium and can not remember which grade i have used. However I do have a friend that spent his working life at IMI titanium division (Now Timet) His advise to me was always "Think Stainless" so all the above comments re dull tools etc hold good.

In a similar era I believe Ferdinand Porsche made an electric car with a motor in each hub.

Welcome along Alex, what sort of things interest you to make ? I am not a model maker, vintage bikes keep me busy.

A rough location would help, there may be someone close by.

Thread: All the gear, no idea
07/04/2021 07:41:55

So sorry to hear of your Father's passing. Can you give a rough location ? County/Nearest City ? Then someone can perhaps advise if there is a local club.

As I go through my 70s and poor health I keep meaning to do a photographic record of my equipment with a description of what it is and a rough value. My Wife and Daughters have no idea other than it's "Dad's Junk" they would be happy just to see it cleared.
