you will soon find a need for a small keyed chuck as the WM180 is very restricted in bed length and that very fancy chuck takes up a lot of it.

The BBC channels are somewhat better on DAB than on FM (tho my listening is only R3 (mostly) & R4 - FM is the one that is heavily companded - the commercial channels often operate at a lower bit rate (more channels/multiplex) and they are worse quality than BBC FM

NG2 - DAB receives one or more multiplex of channels from which single channels can be selected - all DAB sets I've seen have a setup button (or equivalent) to discover all receivable multiplexes/channels then you can assign various preset buttons to stations - it is usual to allow one button to sequence thru stations in one multiplex (eg BBC stations are usually sequential within a single multiplex of channels thus switching between R2, R3 + R4 is simple) - no there will always be a delay in reception as compared to VHF

NG2 - DAB radios are trivial to setup - just what is your difficulty?
They generally offer better reception.

the 3MT is for the headstock
double check that the barrel of the tailstock doesn't rotate its only stopped by the small grub screw in the slot - this needs a nut to lock it in place
also check that the taper on the arbor is not damaged as well as check the tailstock - also the fitting of the tailstock screw may mean that you need extend the barrel a little so that the arbor will fit properly otherwise it is prevented by the screw - on my 180 with most arbours it means the barrel needs to be extended about 12mm. You shouldn't need to thump it just a hard push and it will hold but do watch it doesn't rotate in the barrel if the drill catches (eg drilling brass)and scars it - if it had then buy a 2MT reamer and very gently clean the barrel
ETA if the arbour has a screw thread (eg as used in mills) either buy an 10mm end from Arc or make one as if you forget it you need to dismantle the tailstock to release the arbor-

I'm awaiting just how the OP manages to hold a slide on the WM180 which has no Tslots not much meat to drill and tap a few mounting hole - the only way I can see is to mount it in the 4 way tool post and the reach of this along the slide is rather restricted and rigidity will be interesting.

I have a WM180 but I bought it after I bought a SX1 mill but even so having a couple of T-slots on the WM180 would have been useful for a couple of tasks.

Maybe it should also be pointed out that running WINE on Linux is 99% transparent to the user - assuming the association is set up (and .exe + .com programs are the usual and set up automatically by WINE) then just clicking these will load and start the program; Neil is however correct in that the bugbear are any special drivers especially for new & specialised applications - commonly used equipment quickly acquires Linux drivers if the generic Linux driver is unsuitable.

Fine there are many people who seem happy with surveillance capitalism - testing for age related products should be done at point of attempted purchase (eg by bank card) not up front that is purely for marketing purposes - likewise requiring a name etc - it will be all too easy to move this surveillance to more nasty applications eg China and Russia's attempt to control political discussion - the USA with its medical insurance has been reputed to use info gained from such surveillance to restrict insurance.
Personally I just remove the harddrive and start with a newly wiped drive for a linux install.

Neil - hiding extensions is SOP for win machines - this 'feature' is easy to fix but there will be many more that get you - one problem is that MS used to be case insensitive - interesting and annoying problems when it met case sensitive names.

pgk - that's basically my approach - currently listening to R4 with two laptops in front of me + an additional monitor arranged portrait mode, databasing on one machine the photos held on the other laptop taken a couple of days ago at UK National archives displayed on the monitor - some photos will soon be moved to another machine to OCR using tesseract.

bloatware is simply dealt with - install Linux - buying memory & installing a SSD is not exactly difficult. The rest of the machine must be bog standard unless you paid several thousand - and surely a work machine comes off your or the companies tax bill.

there is not really enough meat in the WM180 cross slide - there are no T-slots tho I guess you may be able to drill & tap a few holes to hold a slide

Possibly the new Pi400 is UK made but given that the vast majority if not all laptops are made in China by relatively few companies - the price difference is partly marketing but also components as you need pay more for those with lifetimes longer than the 1 or 2 year warranty period.
In past I would have said choose Lenovo (which acquired IBM's small computer range) as it both had the best reputation as well as an excellent Linux support. There are backdoors inserted owing to US requirements into all laptops built around Intel processors - the only ones that don't have the necessary chip that controls the microcode backdoor are the old Lenovo T61 range tho there are now mods that supposedly turn off this chip.

assuming you have a dvd reader then acquire a linux system that will run from a dvd rom - the fastest + simplest method is to buy a computer mag with its dvd (Mint or Ubuntu should be fine - I recommend Mint but MX-Linux is also very usable by anyone familiar with Win7 - these won't install anything to the harddrive but will give you firefox (pdfs) + libre office for docx etc - copy your pdf files to a memory card though most modern linux systems will happily read MS files

Once you gain some confidence you can find programs that will shrink your MS system and then you can install Linux which I suspect will give you all you want and more on the freed up space.

Firefox will open pdf files with no problem - it however sounds as though NG2 has, probably accidentally, set pdf files to be opened by another less capable program - on Linux easy to change MIME tyype associations but guess from question he is on a MS system with all that implies.

some years ago Ancestry was notorious for this - almost making it impossible to stop payments - they appeared to mend their ways after significant complaints but from the above comments it sounds as tho they have reverted to being just a nasty American based company.
