Thread: Help needed with my maths please
01/06/2023 12:15:05

That picture of the Tom Senior is sobering but it all went according to plan. I lifted the front made safe and cut 1/2 the pallet away chocked up and then to the back for the same. There was enough room to do that and less than full weight.

The pallet that was on the bottom, it was on two, was the trickiest as there was not much space to cut it in but I took my time and now its down. It was quite top heavy and wanted to tilt to the front right but was never near the point of no return. In all the excitement I missed the 'before' pictures but have a couple during so will have to start an album.

I'm curious about the motor wiring it seems to be wired Delta using red, blue and green with the fourth wire, which is white, unused. Looking at the old colours these colours were used in Australia and Canada ?

Thanks again for all the comments.

Thank you all, there is not enough height to lift the mill off the pallets so have gone for cutting the pallets in half and chocking up then lowering down...first one done and will finish tomorrow.

The acrows and 6x4 are up tight against the garage roof so can't topple and I'm only lifting 1/2 total weight at a time..looking forward to getting to use it at last...and will end up with 4 pallets.

I’ve tried but can’t calculate the following could someone help ?

What diameter horizontal steel bar 4ft long would comfortably support 3/4 of a ton ?

This is my milling machine which I need to lift a couple of inches off 2 pallets It’s in a confined space so can’t use an engine crane/pallet truck etc so am planning to use a chain block and and acrow props which I can just get into the available space. I have tried wood but the size takes up too much room hence the steel rod which may give that extra inch or two.

thanks

Thread: How heavy ?
18/01/2023 11:46:49

Thanks all, that explains things. The bed is roughly even all along when unbolted at the head and tailstock end so about 1/2 X and diminishing to zero when fully vertical.

The hardest bolt to get at, where the bed fixes to the headstock and is a bit tricky to get to - up through the motor/headstock housing is 5.5mm and needs a short allen key in case any one needs to take one apart.

18/01/2023 10:37:04

I was thinking the other day about how much weight I am lifting when I move something heavy around.

I have a Viceroy Denford wood lathe with a long bed which I could never lift off the ground and so to move it I took it apart lifted the bed at one end, the other end being on the floor and shuffled and dragged it.

So if the bed is X lbs what am I lifting if one end is on the ground and I lift the other end ?

Conkers ! that brings it all back... I tried pickling in vinegar, baking in the oven, ageing in the airing cupboard, all kinds of hocus locus but never could get that unbeatable smasher...

Thread: 1 HP single Phase motor for mill
24/09/2022 23:38:58

Thanks all again for more info, 3 phase keeps getting recommended if possible I see.

I'll also look at the capacitor and single phase route, thanks for the clear diagrams Vic.

Yes Emgee the house is 60/70's era.

More research..

Cheers Carl

It's definitely 3 phase all electricians who have seen the supply have confirmed and been surprised its there.. iand as far as I know PME sheath earth as it is underground supply, large diameter armoured cabled.. the reason it is here ? I thought it may have been something to do with when the estate was built, used by the builders ? I can't remember who said it may have been the storage heaters. As far as i know no neighbours have it and it can't have been put there by a previous owner as the house single phase comes off it,

It would be just for one 1HP motor, although maybe 2 other smaller as I have the old 3 phase motors for the Myford and Denford wood lathe( both less than 1HP) . which I think would affect cable diameter so that would need to be decided.

Sorry lacking a few details there...

There is 3 phase into the house next to the meter. ( i think because there used to be storage heaters in the bungalow) and it ends in an old switch/fuse box which would need up-dating. There is single phase supply to the workshop already but was tempted to 3 phase until I found out the cost.

The cable would go up from the the hallway/fusebox into the roof, along to the other side of the house, down the outside of the bungalow, under the path ( 2 yards) up the side of the garage into the workshop.

I would do all the cable laying the electrician would connect up to switch/fuse box from the meter and the fuse box in the workshop and sign off. I'm in Suffolk.

Jason, have PM'd you re. motor.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

It has a 3 phase motor, a British Thomson-Houston 400/440 1.6A 1390 RPM foot mounted at the moment but was bought as is and had been standing for a long while so not sure what state the motor is in or how to test it. I am confident with single phase but not sure on 3.

I have looked at inverters and think a decent one is almost £200 so am looking at alternatives although I understand 3 phase is the preferred route to take ( or an inverter as An Other says.)

On the subject of 3 phase, I am lucky to have 3 phase at the property, well to the meter. I got a price to wire up the workshop from there and was quoted just over £ 600 ! this by a company I had used before and seemed OK, I thought it was a bit much. Any electricians out there who have a rough idea what fair pice would be ? Workshop is a single garage next to the bungalow, cable run 20 yards roughly.

I'm looking for a single phase motor about 1 HP for my Hayes Milling Machine can anyone recommend a reliable make/supplier please ?

Thanks

Not sure which spindle you have but I am sure mine is 10 degrees, I made some trial collets ages ago as I couldn’t find them anywhere. Pantograph services had some left but they were not cheap !

They are very helpful, giving me advice to free up the bearings in my bench machine, I think the people there have been with them for years...very knowledgeable.

Thread: MetalSmith Leeds Ltd

Yes I was looking at it earlier, but no reply to email or phone call...perhaps they are away,

12/07/2022 12:02:03

Good morning, does anyone know if MetalSmith Ltd in Leeds is still in buisness?

I'm trying to contact them to order some Nickel Silver tubing from their extensive stock but can't get an answer on the phone.

Thanks

Thread: Removing powder coating finish from metal.
08/01/2021 17:28:00

It's a Specialised Stumpjumper, steel tube version, double or triple butted but not sure how thick the walls are. Some one on Youtube demonstrated gasket remover, CPC i think, googled the active ingredients and you wouldn't want to do it indoors.

Some finishers dip them i think but the one who got back to me didn't offer that. Would find out the media used if i went down that road. Trying to keep the costs down and of course like to do as much as possible myself ! Plan to paint, easier to touch up scratches and knocks than a powder coat.

08/01/2021 14:46:58

Has any one had any success removing a powder coat finish from metal ? I have been quoted £50 for blasting from a powder coating company ( bicycle frame and forks) Thank you in advance
