Thread: Mastiff
13/05/2019 17:53:58

I have completed the Len Mason Mastiff assembled all parts. The timing is correct but no compression!

took it all to bits, ground in the valves and checked the valves not kept open by the tappets.

Think got some compression but not sure. The cylinder head and cover plate plus plugs camshaft and crankshaft all reassembled and in position but don't want to take it further (really only setting the distributor arm) without someone knowledgeable casting their eye over it and reassuring me compression would be sufficient to get it firing

I would therefore like to contact Brian and unless he lives somewhere totally inaccessible and if he could spare an hour of his time then I could visit him.

not sure allowed to give tel no or email on a post so won't,but perhaps Brian could post re visit

There is more than a hint of desperation here! I started on Mastiff 5 years ago .... Simon

Carb opening for Mastiff is 5 mm. For the vapour one it is only 3 mm.could try enlarging the opening on the vapour one to 5 mm.Am trying to avoid having to build the Carb for Mastiff as per plans as it looks beyond my capabilities! Contacting Jan Ridders sounds a good idea but how do I do that? Simon

Would this carburettor (described in ME Sept 2015) be suitable for the Len Mason Mastiff justo run it for demonstration? The Capacity is three quarters of an inch times a seven eights inch stroke for each of the 4 cylinders of the Mastiff.

Is the Ridders carburettor really only for single cylinder engine? Simon

I can't seem to find a simple way to post a wanted ad on the site.

but here goes!

I am with some difficulty building the Mastiff following The instructions of L.C.Mason

Have finished the connecting Rods Have tapped the Big End Caps 5Ba as instructed only to find out that no one has made 5 ba socket screws for yonks! Mason wrote the instructions in 1973!

Could use 5ba round head scews but access to tighten them in crankcase means using bent screwdriver and cannot get enough pressure to nip them up

I Know all the metric equivalents but cannot go bigger without going into bore and smaller would mean starting again

So are there any model engineers older than me(70) who have any 5ba socket screws? to save my Sanity I will pay your Price!
