Thread: Help needed for size of ash pan on a Lion titfield thunderbolt
30/05/2020 19:29:51

Hi, I have a LION 5" gauge loco that I am restoring . The main item is the fire ash pan is missing . I am hoping that one of you nice lads can let me know the size of the ash box including the depth .Also does the retaining pin got through the lugs on the bottom of the fire box, or if its very shallow would the pin go underneath the box.I don't think I could make one by myself as I am now 86 and 3 quarters Thank you in advance..Kind regards Alan

Thread: THE [ GOLD MINE PLANT ] ? NOW READY TO BE SOLD
16/10/2018 11:05:04

Hi Lads, this is about my [ gold/ diamond/ pay dirt plant ] that was listed last year and must now go to a new owner. Thanking all of you members that viewed and commented on the plant, and for the praise that you gave me for part restoration and paint job. My problem left hand is now very much useless to me so I am unable to finish the plant as I would like to have done . However most of the hard work in freeing the rusted parts has been completed and working, Just needs adjustments and a few more of the items put back...The complete plant will weigh over a QUARTER OF A TON. Not sure of the best place to advertise this item but will start with Ebay in the next few weeks, Anyone is welcome to view the plant as is , any time at our home in SUTTON ON SEA lincs..Lots of photos can be seen in the forum threads and I have a lot more, I was hoping to add a live steam engine to run the plant with but no luck with finding the right one

Thread: HELP what is it ????
14/10/2018 08:24:59

Thank you all for your very kind and helpful comments, [ although Model engineering don't seem interested in it ] The plant will soon be listed on Ebay etc as my one good hand is letting me down a bit now. Many people have seen it in our driveway and taken photos etc ,but it just needs a little more work to complete the model. Now taken up collecting antique steam engines such as Stuart turner etc that I can handle . so poss part exchanges,[ just bought a stuart 6a and had to pay the postman to help me to get it on my work bench ] so nothing much larger than that one.

PS Can anyone please tell me what sort of air compressor I will need to run my 6 large stuart turner engines on air, something with enough oopf but not to heavy,to run twin Victoria etc engines

25/06/2018 19:29:45

Thank you Ian, that would be good but I don't know anything about how to do this. But thanks again Alan

22/06/2018 19:55:27

Thank you Neil, but I don't think I am up to that . I am not the demonstrative type. but it realy would be great thanks again alan

21/06/2018 09:09:56

Thank you all for your lovely remarks and comments, , [ you just brought a tear to an old fogies eyes ] I have had a lot comments on what the plant may be but nothing conclusive as yet ,perhaps someone will see it and identify it for sure .As I say I have not done all the work and not started on the crane in the original photos as it is still seized up and I am not sure if it is part of the original plant [cannot think why it would need a crane as the line shaft that it was fixed to is fully braked by turning the spoked wheel. If had the use of both my hands I would love to complete the plant, but that is not possible now ,so may put it on ebay etc to see what interest it gets. its quite a heavy item ,probably, over a quarter of a ton so I have made a swivelling wheel platform to move it around our garage etc.

Thanks again , your a great bunch of lads, so glad that I joined the club Alan

Hello its the "HELP WHAT IS IT ? MAN AGAIN

THE MODEL GOLD MINE COME WHATEVER, HAS NOW HAD A FACE LIFT

I HAVE SPENT ALL WINTER AND BEST PART OF THIS SPRING JUST FREEING UP MOST OF THE MACHINERY ITEMS, AND PAINTING . OVER 400 HOURS / 30 SANDING BLOCKS / 6 CANS OF WD 40 / PLUS PAINT AND RED OXIDE, ALSO VERY SORE HANDS, AND ITS LOOKING A BIT BETTER.ALTHOUGH MOST OF IT WAS DONE WITH MY ONE GOOD HAND.I HAVE TAKEN MANY PHOTOS AS A LOT OF ITEMS HAD TO BE DISMANTLED TO MAKE THEM WORK AGAIN, HOWEVER IT IS NOT A COMPLETE JOB AND WILL NEED A BIT MORE WORK, WHICH I AM UNABLE TO DO MYSELF AS MY 85TH BIRTHDAY IS VERY NEAR.SO I WILL PROBABLY ADVERTISE IT FOR SALE AND RETIRE PROPPER...A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THAT HAVE SUPORTED ME ON THIS PROJECT I.WILL PUT PHOTOS ON THIS MESSAGE WITH MORE IF NEEDED

dscf1307.jpgdscf1306.jpgdscf1306.jpgdscf1305.jpgHear are a few photos of a clock I recently acquired, it measures 24" long by 18" wide and 18" tall on its base and with cover, three locos run back and forward on 3 separate tracks that go up and down and various angles.and about every 15 mins or so.however I think the main spring has come off its fixing point or broken as it gave a twang when winding it up , So may not be keeping this one as I had a accident on my left wrist with a electric model saw which has left me with only one hand to work with , does anyone know of a clock maker or repairer in our area [ SUTTON ON SEA] lincs east coast..dscf1302.jpg

Thank you all again for your interest and helpful comments, I think Dave has probably got the best idea so far, I will post photos / progress etc when the weather gets a bit warmer for me to work outside on the big lump of iron work.

have a great Christmas all of you and thanks again....alan

I don't think so Ian, as its far to complicated for just sifting stone, with 7 hoppers and 12 outlet chutes, plus 22 pulleys. and other complicated moving parts ,and just found another small sieve for even smaller particles inside the plant.

but a big thank you for your interest. have a great Christmas, alan

Today I moved the smaller parts of the plant into our shed to make things easy to work on. 4 more photos of bits taken off today, still not sure what the plant is , but many helpful and very welcome suggestions . I thought that HACKSAW had the answer but I have looked at hundreds of photos of Seaton burn colliery and it is nothing like that at all. several of you have asked where we live, it is TRUSTHORPE which is between MABLETHORPE and SUTTON ON SEA lincs east coast. so if you find yourself in this area then you would be very welcome to come and have a cup of coffee etc and look at this item and my other steam locos etc. the last photo shows an American 5" loco that I have just finished restoring etc. so I can get on with this project now. wishing you all a very happy Christmas, alan & heidi

I am thinking of moving the plant into my new shed which is lined with 2" thick polystyrene walls and roof, so will be warmer for me to work on it this winter, it will be a slow job but worth doing, going to make a start on the workshop/ hut next which is quite large and has a furnace with a chain coming down from the roof ,this works a large old air bellows made of metal and leather and sends air down to the furnace. also has a working blacksmiths vice and a old anvil . The large plant will have to be taken apart after many photos ,so I know how to put it all back together . I have never heard of REMAP but I will put it up on the internet.. thank you for all your encouragement ,and help alan

Thank you Martin, but the specialist that I saw was the top man in Britain for hand injuries, and I have been told that Physiotherapy will only cause more pain. so have to accept that, fortunately it is my left hand that I damaged and I am right handed and at least ,I still have all my fingers even if 4 of them don't work, but thank you again for your concern and advice. alan
