Ther are lots of good stuff on YT but my favourite is " Old Time Steam Workshop " by David Richards, an example of a 1925 machine shop powered by steam and lineshafts, proper old school and a joy to watch go on fellas treat yourselves

Having had a reasonable level of education in the 40's and 50's I have never felt the need for these spellcheckers, my last spellchecker was my Secondary School English teacher, okay I make the odd mistake but am I bothered? Answer= No, this is my personal opinion and not critical of people who do use said provision

Harold Hall has a design for a jig on his website and you tube, I made one and use on a normal bench grinder, you don't need an expensive toolgrinder

Just ordered 2nd edition black book, prices are crazy, on the" Warrior woman" website 80 odd and one 189 quids, found same book on our favourite auction site for just over £20, guess which copy I bought

Sorry David for delay in answer to your question, I originally made the dividing head to index dial indicators for my lathe and old mill,the lathe bed seemed agood base to work from,sitting on the bed it is lower than centre height of lathe and it seemed a good idea to mount engraver to cross slide to be able to place it where I wanted it by using the saddle traverse and arrange it to be on centre height of dividing head. The dividing head was not built to be on centre height of lathe mounted on the cross slide but could be packed up to align if needed from the lathe bed. As always with hindsight a more adaptable set up might have been useful but it has worked ok and it was enjoyable makingt the tools

I made HH's version use it on bed of lathe here shown graduating dials for my Adcock & Shipley horizontal mill, constuction was straitforward using stock material

Fair point Martin, the base and pillar will be held down with 3 bolts into a 3" long t nut, but I am considering adding a 1/4" toe plate the toe of which will tie into the middle t slot, I just like the idea that means centre height can be adjusted easily, if this works then great but if not I have plenty of hacksaw blades

Thanks for comments thus far,all very interesting. Started my own version,base is 3" diam x 1" thick, pillar is 1" dia with end let into 3/4" hole in base. The base will be secured with two cap heads situated each side of pillar which in turn will be held with an M8 through stud to another t nut, the toolholder probably 2" x 2" square of bms, still to design. I have made as chunky as I can Mick

In the spirit of the conversation I won't mention that I had the jab with no ill effects, I can now carry on with making my rear toolpost without fear

On reflection the type in my photo is the one to make, the centre height is easily adjusted and looking at various YT videos most use no back rake it would seem to me that back rake improves the chance of a dig in and can lead to excessive grinding of tool to maintain thickness of taper as Duncan points out, will post a photo of my effort when completed

Thanks Larry,I saw this on a recent thread recently and like the design does allow easy adjustment fo centre height, trying to find more info on it
