Thread: Micrometer woes |
26/01/2019 16:48:32 |
Hi Phil, I get this all the time with old cased micrometers, it does not seem to matter what make they are although perhaps Mitutoyo are slightly worse than M&W. All I do is blow the worst off and out of the cases; I use meths to clean the instrument and if really bad a gentle touch with very fine grade Garryflex block. Not much can be done about the staining. For the case linings I have tried all sorts and latterly have settled on either the soft black padded vinyl that HALFORDS sell as boot lining OR the black non slip material that lines drawers. Both are good. Using foam when you have a lot to do is abit of a faff as it does not cut well leaving ragged edges. I use spray mount sparingly to stick the new linings in. For larger cases I use adhesive backed sound proofing foam from EBay, cost very little and one lot will last me literally years and I do a LOT of cases. Cheers, Martin |

Thanks guys, that is all really helpful info. The guy I got it from said he has more to clear from the same source and I have his number so will check to see if the rest of it might come to light. Cheers, Martin |

Hi Baz, Thanks for the info. Cannot seem to see how the odd bits fit on the main part? Is it complete? Edited By Martin King 2 on 20/01/2019 21:42:49 |

Hi All, Got this today at our local car boot, very heavy but cleaned up nicely. My only thoughts are that it might be part of a tool & cutter grinder? No makers marks anywhere so I assume it is user made. Any help would be welcome. Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Got this at a flea market over the weekend, its in a bit of a state but judging by the first cylinder I have cleaned up it looks like it will come back from the dead. I have absolutely no idea what this loco is, whether it is scratch built or a known type. The width between the wheel flanges is 3 1/2". The boiler part seems very well made indeed and I was told that the project was started many years ago by the guys father? Any help much appreciated. Cheers, Martin |

Having just gone through a nightmare with a leak fault on our Glow Worm Ulracom 30cxi Combi boiler I am now having lots of grief with radiators that will not turn down on the TRV. The boiler was leaking through the pressure relief valve, about a bucket or so every 2 days. Heating Engineer changed the valve and checked the expansion vessel to see if it was holding pressure, all OK. Next we were not getting any decent hot water pressure or temperature. Plumber comes back and fits a new plate exchanger that I sourced on EBay (genuine part), did a power flush of the whole system which had very little muck in it, almost clear water, cleaned the Magnetic reservoir also. Still getting the relief valve leak and finally tracked it down to one of the filling loop valves which was passing water. Fitted new valve and leak is cured now. Strange as we never use these as we have an separate filling loop? Refilled the system after adding Fernox, bled all the rads starting at the top and pressurised the system to 1.5 Bar cold. Hot water pressure and temperature now good and heating mostly works with the new Hive thermostat I fitted. I have removed the TRV and shut off the small radiator which is near the Thermostat to avoid fals readings. EXCEPT we have two radiators (large doubles) one downstairs in lounge and one in our upstairs bedroom which do not seem to respond to the TRV settings just stay full on whatever we do? I have removed the TRV heads and checked the pins for movement and tapped the side gently with a hammer and they seem free not stuck. Have tried swapping each valve for the one from the hall but makes no difference? Now out of ideas! ??? Any help welcome please! Martin |

Hi Colin, We often have customers who want to pay right away but not collect the item for a while, next time they are in UK etc, We have a couple of customers who currently have over 20 items each awaiting their visit here in January. Personally I do not see much wrong with sending name and address and having a cheque that will easily have time to clear before letting the goods go, especially as he is going to collect them in person. Alternatively ask for cash on collection? Regards, Martin |

Hi John McN, I presume you meant horizontal mill? I looked at the clamping in the vertical plane idea, but it seemed that no matter what I did with what I have at hand the whole thing was going to move about and 'sing' like a banshee.. There is no way around the amount of projection of the work to get to the 4 grooves needed and resetting and tramming after each groove would be a RPITA! As to material it is supplied soft (relatively!) Cheers Martin |

Hi all, I have had a go at milling these grooves myself and it has cost me about 4 carbide 2mm cutters so far! Bit of trial and error with speed and feeds has finally got it sorted out: Funnily enough faster feeds worked better although still pretty slow work. Most of the breakages were at the end of the cut accidentally bumping into the uncut previous pass. Fortunatly I have lots of small cutters that I have never had cause to use before. I trammed the work in with a Dti and total runout is only about 1.5 thou over the distance milled. It does look like I am going to have to get this done on a horizontal mill to make sense for the quantity I need. Some progress though, I will get these cut to length in the week and see how that goes. Cheers, Martin |

Have had lots of ships logs, components are usually brass or bronze. These would not last long in seawater, but a nice idea! Antenna item seems to be a better bet? Martin |

Hmmm, certainly sounds feasable, I guess the quick release tops are for letting go whatever lifted it up in the air? Like the sound of corsets though!.... Martin |

Hi All, Had a very productive day out at Shepton Mallet Flea Market and bought some very nice tools fairly sensibly which is unusual for there! Could not resist these oddities but have no idea what they are, any thoughts welcome. They have grease nipples to the bottom as shown but what are the holes in the castings for? Cheers, Martin |

Neil, Totally agree but I have to use what I have.... This is all a bit 'suck it and see' I know but one has to give these things a try. Emgee, I agree he is being more than fair and we have agreed that if I need more we will renegotiate if needed. There are other special irons for spokeshaves that are also very hard to find which I am looking at. This time of year my car boot hunting is at a very low ebb so we have time to explore these avenues. Cheers, Martin |
