Hi All,

I have about 3 or 4 16mm solid carbide 3 flute slot/end mills that are my 'go to' cutters for most of the work I do.

Two are now very blunt and the third is getting that way. 4th is still brand new.

I have no way of sharpening these and would be happy to pay someone to redo them me. Plus each way post of course!

There are maybe 6 or so HSS cutters also to do but not vital.

Perhaps someone with a T&C diamond grinder can help me here?

Regards, Martin

Thread: Small Scale CNC work required, any takers?
18/09/2019 15:32:41

Hi All,.

Finally got around to having another go at these plough plane cutters.

I have several RECORD & RAPIER 043 type small planes all with no cutters. These are quite wanted so had to sort it out!

I finally came up with this fixture made to hold the gauge plate exactly square, clamped by the top plate:

bladefixture.jpg

Using a 1/16" HSS slitting saw at low speed in back gear I was surprised how easily the cut went, no chatter, or nasty ringing sounds this time. I used lots of oil on the blade and a slow but constant feed. I fed the stock after each cut allowing for the blade thickness on the DRO.

3 cuts giving a 1/8", 3/16" & 1/4" blade set took exactly 8 minutes and the finish was way better than the chop saw method from before with the parts only needing a quick deburring. No bending or jagged ends like before.

I ground the bevels on each one then oil hardened and tempered to straw colour.

Fortunately the 043 irons do not have the grooves so they are very easy.

Now wondering whether the MYFORD would be man enough to gang up 2 or more saws and try the grooves?

Any thoughts on that please?

Andrew,

Many years ago I had a long drive of a LOLA T70 MkIIIB, lots of fun, doubt that I could even get in it today!

Gray,

You are spot on, its one of two built by LOLA as Sebring homage cars, was going to be 6 but the other 4 never happened. Roll cage and bucket seats are there. Engine is 255bhp, all body parts except the tub are either glass or alloy, only the windshield is glass, all other is perspex. The exhaust sysyem is a $4000 work of art! Has overdrive also.

The owner is about to order an MGBGT from Frontline MG, worth checking that out! 2 year wait though.

The very distinctive straight 6 sound has to be heard to be believed!

An old pal from NZ keeps it over here to use when he is in the UK.

Seriously loud, my pal and his wife wear noise cancelling headphones with intercom when using it!

Can anyone guess exactly what it is?

Hi Bazyle,

Actually I disagree on a couple of points:

We had 4 independent valuations by estate agents, two of whom were aware that we were looking at ER, two who were not.

Valuations varied by less than 5%

We then submited our top numbers to the ER perople and when their valuer came round they agreed our top valuation with no quibble.

The property does not become "theirs" until you ( or in our case both of us die. Even then they (ER) only get their portion of the sale proceeds including the accrued interest, your estate gets the remainder.

They make their profit by the way the compound interest accrues very favourably to them.

Having recently done this for my wife and I the only important comment I can make is that one should consider the option whereby you can access whatever sum is arrived at in installments as you need the money rather than take it all in one large lump. This REALLY mitigates the rate of the compound interest that accrues.

I know that the OP said this does not matter but it is just prudent to not pay more than necessary.

The amount released can be hugely increased if you really do not care about the rate of initial interest charged, we opted for an extra 0.25% and got another £30k avialable!

Also be very awrae that any "bail out" of the scheme in the first 12 years is VERY punitive.

We have no kids either and will use the dosh to ease our later years and have some fun, ie holidays which we never had before!

Thread: Unusual Boat Propellers?
05/08/2019 17:57:16

Hi All,

Came across these at the car boot yesterday and my magpie fetish grabbed me by the wallet!

The are two LH & RH props for what exactly?

props 11.jpg

props 8.jpg

The blades are not the usual shape but have a straight cut across them.

Some one said they are 'surface acting' whatever that is.

They will probably end up as 'steam punk if they do not sell!

Nice bit of boat jewellery though! smiley

Hi All,

FWIW, on film sets these days, (and for some time) the large diameter cables used for film lighting are all made of aluminium, purely to save weight.

Film sparks are usuaully of large build and still sometimes struggle to carry the larger length cables used on location. How they ever managed with copper I cannot say.

How they manage the terminations when used in alll weathers again I do not know.

Old broken chisel handles are a good source of small pieces of boxwood.

Perfect for the model ship purpose above and can be picked up at car boots for peanuts!

We use LV bowls for making mallets, hardly any waste that way! They have got harder to find and therefore more expensive but I never pay more than a fiver for one.

We remove a LOT of broken boxwood handles and keep the best ones for using to replace bits of lost "boxing" on antique fillester or rebate planes. Fiddly work to get the end grain right but worth doing on some of the more valuable planes.

Thread: Any other bowmakers on here?
13/07/2019 16:54:35

Hi Mike,

IRRC are not the best bows made of Pernambuco? I bought an old violin once in with some other tools and junk and it sat in the shed for months until someone with some knowledge came by and saw it in the corner. He pulled it out and said that the violin was rubbish but the bow was possibly special; it had silver inlays along with the nacre and was beautifully made. It went to a posh auction house and made over £150 which amazed me!

Never seen another one since..,boo hoo!
