Hi all, Some progress on the serrrated item, found this very similar item. "It is a curry comb. It has a wick at the end. The handle is the fuel tank. Made of brass. I assume its from the 1860's to 1880's" Beakins Patent Singer Curry Comb. Maybe my item is a later form using gas? Similar in all respects? |

BTW is that a helix on the parallel brass part of the point? Martin |

Michael, If the grubby window part will clean up it will transform the item visually! Just wondering if there are is any small melted pitting on the inside which would support the arc idea? ie sparks? Martin (who had no idea that this thread would run on so!) Excellent detailed work. Martin |

Thread: Chinese "K40" laser |
20/08/2021 22:33:44 |
Hi All, Sorry to hijack this thread but recently I saw some videos of a hand held laser cleaning portable unit that worked miracles on things like alloy cylinder heads, surface rust on metal, paint and grease on castings etc It did not abrade or damage the surface in any way and looked to be the answer to all my tool cleaning prayers! I got onto the company (TLM Laser) and the guy called me back and we decided that it was perfect for my needs the only drawback being it cost £58,000! Power was 50W to 200W depending on the model. Why are they SO expensive please? Regards, Martin .... Not ordering one any time soon! |

Hi Nigel, There is no item 3! The bottom pic is from the bottom of the sight glass item. Main brass body is 28.5mm diameter; 145mm tall Martin |

Hi All, Just back from an auction with a crate of odd brass ware including these two odd items: Some sort of gas burning tool but no ideas what for? Some sort of sight glass, a lot of the other items are steam related but this one has me stumped, there is a small bung or cork as indicated. Possibly for a stationary engine? Any ideas welcome! Cheers, Martin |

No spring that i can see but there does appear to be a kind of small window by the clip and as one winds the end knob a sloping point moves back and forth in the window. window is quite murky and discolored so not easy to see. Hers a pretty ropy pic:

Nothing seems to happe when the end cap is turned, as I said it looks incomplete? Martin |
09/08/2021 18:50:07 |
Hi all, This little item was in the bottom of a crate of tooling we just got, I think it is incomplete but would love to know its specific use? Turning the end moves the pointer along the scale marked "Micrographs" Cheers, Martin |

Thread: What on Earth would this be used for? |
26/07/2021 16:07:28 |
Hi All, We often get the old brass pump up type blow lamps in with the stuff we buy and some sell OK and some just go for scrap. At Cheddar yesterday my wife called me over to look at this colossus! This thing takes 5 PINTS of paraffin and pumps up to 30psi! It is bloody heavy and I cannot see how anyone could possibly use it! Does it have a special application? The chap I got it from said that he thought it might be something to do with old railways? It is British made and is a BURMOS IB/4166 with a 1954 date stamp. There are some pics on the 'net but no explanation as to what it would be used for? Cheers, Martin |

Hi All, Thanks for the interest! I have gone the route of drilling and tapping the holes M12 and loctiting in a piece pf pre drilled M12 Cap Screw which I will open up to M10 x1 (Fine) to take the plunger. Have centre popped the underside edges to make really sure it does not move. The bolt material is pretty hard so if the tapping proves a problem I will go the "top hat" route as suggested. Why I did not think of a helicoil I do not know! Maybe because I have never actually used one! I knew this project would be a good learning experience and so it is turning out! Cheers, Martin (KBO) |

Hi Martyn, Spent a large chunk of my life freelance in the film industry making commercials, pop promos and features including the 1st Harry Potter. Somewhere I have some old Eyemo cameras used for "throw away" shots in explosions, tanks rolling over them etc, also an ARRi 2C Sound Blimp. God knows where they are but I do not remember binning them! Martin |
