Jason, Thank you for your thoughts and for the offer of the plans. I would very much like to make a non return valve for myself so would like to take you up on your offer… thank you. Regards |

Hello, https://youtu.be/VOkWH87X8ac I’m looking for some inspiration as to where would be the best place to locate the petrol tank on my latest Upshur IC Engine project… see above link to my YouTube channel. Ideally I would like the tank positioned with the filler cap inline with the front of the carburettor and slightly away from the engine (the fuel level height must be between ¼” and ½” below the carburettor inlet pipe). For me, this is problematic as I feel that I lack the necessary skills to make this happen. It has been suggested to me that I locate the tank at the base of the engine then either make or buy some sort of non return valve which would be fitted to the carburettor inlet pipe which is ¼” tubing. I would appreciate any suggestions. Regards, Tom

Hello, I’ve been pulling out what little hair I have theses last few hour trying to work out how to cut the Cam for my build of the Upshur I/C Engine. The plans appear to show an offset on the mandrel of 0.312”, I can not get this to work. When I was unable to cut the Cam shape I altered the offset to 0.156”….. this did not work! I have attached photos of the Cam plans and two of my results. Can anyone explain where I’m going wrong? Thread: Ignition Spark |

Gentlemen, I had no idea that my post would produce so much interest... once again thank you for all your words of wisdom. This is my first Petrol Engine build so I need all the help I can get! After contacting Minimag and speaking to Julian and Bernadette, the proprietors, I chose their MCL-1 Low Power Capacitor Ignition kit (this is powered by two AA batteries). I found Julian and Bernadette to be most helpful and the kit was delivered the next day. At this point I should say that other than being a satisfied customer, I have no other affiliation to Minimag. Mounting tha 3mm x 2mm neodymium magnet on the camshaft on such a small engine may be problematic. I think my best option is probably to go for the crankshaft and take a hit on the battery power which is being wasted. I tested the kit this evening and it works fine on the CM-6 spark plug. Julian told me that he has used this ignition kit to run a Lister D type. Regards Tom |

Gentlemen, Sorry for the delay in answering your responses. I've contacted Minimags and bought one of their setups. Thank you all for your comments. Regards Tom |

Hello, I'm after some help again! I am in the process of making a small 4 stroke Petrol Engine with a 3/4" bore. I'm almost at the stage where I need to fabricate the points. Does anyone know where I would be able to buy power pack/coil? I have been told that you can buy ones which run off AA batteries but as yet I have not been able to source one. I'm using a CM 6 spark plug.... the type used in the smallest Honda generators. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Tom |

Hello, I'm looking for some help with converting American sizes to U.K. sizes. After building several stationary steam engines I have taken the plunge and decided that my next build will be the Upshur Vertical "Hit and Miss" petrol engine. Having purchased the plans, and studied them in detail, I am somewhat confused as to the screw fixing sizes and numbered drill holes that are used e.g. 6-32 thread. Does anyone know if I can easily convert these American sizes to either BA or metric? I have no connection to Noggin End Metals other than the fact that I have used their services on numerous occasions. I have always found them to be competitive and quick. A quick phone call and a credit card.... sorted! I hope this is of some help. Regards Tom

Hello, I have decided that my next project will be to build the Upshur IC Model Pump Engine. My understanding is that I will require a 2:1 ratio gear set. I am not at a standard where I would be able to cut a set of gears for myself so can anyone point me in the direction where I could buy them? Also, has anyone any hints or tips for this build? Regards Tom |

Gentlemen, Thank you very much for your input. Sorry for the delay... I have recently had problems with my internet connectivity and have just received a new router from Sky. The new router appears to have done the job! I am a mere Driving Examiner and have no engineering qualifications. I do not make a habit of using a DTI in that manor but I felt that I was struggling with my description so that was my reasoning for using the DTI. I have made very subtle alterations to the gib screws which has made a big difference. I have checked the flatness use Marking Blue and a Surface Plate. I now happy with the tolerance that I have. Once again thank you for all your help. Regards, Tom |
