Thread: 1/8th BSP male thread "taping" size?
18/07/2014 13:10:40

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses- I think I assumed that the OD of an un-cut thread started off bigger, and the action of cutting reduced it. I sit corrected- the OD before and after cutting a thread is the same.

I do have a Zeus book, dated '65...a year younger than me, and I don't know why I didn't look in there first- I think I assumed a BSP thread would not be mentioned.

Andrew- a typo- I did, in fact order a split die, but even so, I didn't know there was a difference between a split die and a die-nut!

Thanks again- threads cut successfully!

Andy.

Hi,

I want to thread a rod 1/8" BSP, but I cannot find out what the OD would need to be. I have a die nut on order. I can easily find out that a taping hole size is 8.6mm (if I remember correctly) for a female thread, but I can't find the equivalent for a male thread.

Am I being thick? Is it the same size whether male or female threads?

I am not sufficiently skilled to thread on the lathe, nor do I want to delay this job whilst I become so!

Thanks

Andy.

Thread: Bench Grinder
18/06/2014 11:28:10

This thread prompted me to look at my grinder last night- a KangoWolf 8348 6" unit, with a view to determining shaft size to fit polishing mops.

On the inside of the top of the guarding on each wheel is an external thumbscrew-adjustable 'blade', similar to that which guides airflow onto a turbine.

Anyone know what this is for? I meant to take a photo, but didn't.

Very interesting, Neil

... and it reminded me to check this HSE publication

Slightly off-topic, but I wondered if the tank for my compressor would need an independent inspection. However, [subject to the usual HSE caveats] the threshold for this seems to be 250 bar-litres [which I do find surprisingly high] so the answer is "probably not".

MichaelG.

A 25 litre air receiver at ~100psi (i.e. 170 bar-litres- below the PSSR Regs' limit) as is typical of most home compressors [mine included], if it failed, contains sufficient stored energy to demolish a brick-built garage.... a sobering thought.

(PSSR Compliance is one of my work hats.)

Thread: Variable speed motor.

There are VFDs that purport to give increased torque at slow speeds, but I don't think its significant (can anybody supply more information?)

Gary,

these are called 'Vector' drives- a massive (actually frightening) increase in torque at low speeds- but still quite expensive. ("frightening" because it's so unexpected that such a slow running motor has so much torque!)

Thread: iPad Newsstand 'subscription'? Missing out?
07/03/2014 16:25:03

OK, Thanks. I didn't realise it wasn't 'direct' and it seems there is no way to cancel.

Could you maybe put a sticky up to guide people to subscribe through the proper channels?

Hi, I'm new to this forum- having only discovered it's existence by accident on a Google search! I have had a break for 5 years or so from MEW type activities, having previously been a subscriber to MEW. I've today bought a mill from Arceurotrade and am getting interested again!

On my iPad this week, I found an option to 'subscribe' to MEW, which I did. However, I do not have a subscriber number, and having read the magazine, discover that I may have missed out on freebies if I had subscribed in the conventional way.

Is the iPad 'newsstand' subscription equivalent to a conventional subscription? If so, can I get a subscriber number, and have I missed out on freebies?

Thanks,

Andy (feeling I might have missed out!)
