Thread: lathe wanted

No such thing as a cynic. It's a word used by an idealist to describe a realist like you and me and one or two more. DS&G eh? Nice but just out of my price range unfortunately. I'm a firm believer that the right lathe will turn up. No pun intended.

That's all positive stuff. Gary, thanks for the link. I'm in Chesterfield so I'm in the centre of the country, ish. Imagine my surprise about colchester beds cast in China. Just as much shock as the Harrogate exibition several years back when Mr Myford informed me that my Chester 626 mill was a Myford VMC which hadn't been finish machined and finally assembled by the lads at Chilwell and given a slap of Myford grey and a Myford badge! Hence the price differential. I've put my email on the Warco site to be informed when the new 1236 is in. In the meantime theres no harm in having a look round. Beats the hell out of christmas shopping. Speaking of which. . . . .

Thanks guys. Some positive comments there. I recently found some sort of forum where most of the comments were decrying Chesters abysmal after sales service and poorly manufactured machines but I've been unable to find it since. (memory's gone). The new Warco 1236 looks a likely candidate due to it's three foot centre distance, that is unless something Colchester 6" x 36" or thereabouts pops up. Obviously the more recent Chinese machines are being quality controlled to a higher standard and the tempting part is the amount of standard equipment being supplied within the VAT and delivery inclusive price. Hmmmm, Dear Santa. . . . . .

I hope to attend Chester open event as im after a 6 inch centre height lathe. The problem is all the Colchester/Harrison stuff I chase has either "just gone mate" or it's overpriced junk. Does anyone own a Crusader or similar size Chinese model of Chester/Warco or whatever brand name who can say based on experience whether to buy Chinese or keep chasing used Colchester/ Harrison. Mostly the verbal comments have ranged from "I wouldn't buy one" to "they're a load of junk", therefore constructive comments would be welcome.

Thanks. Rick K.

Thanks for advice Ady1 and Bazyle. Every little helps. Its just that the Perrier plans from Norman that were re drawn by C J Gilburt in the 80's leave a bit to be desired, in particular because several of the castings norm sold me not long before he sadly left us are smaller as cast than the finish machined dimensions on the plans, however I'll carry on engineering and carefully compensate for any shortcomings. Its not a scale replica after all. Thanks

Was there ever a series of words and music for Brit in 5" gauge and if so could anybody tell me where and when. So far I'm getting nowhere fast. I wish to trace back issues of whatever publication it was, if it ever existed. For me to download the Usher carry on and learn to use it would take longer than the build time! Thank you.

Thread: Dimmer Switch

to back up Martin W, a central heating pump is an induction motor therefore speed variation is only possible via a frequency inverter. don't try putting it through a dimmer switch.

Thread: 5 inch Britannia.

Thanks Gary, but CAD package and ABILITY TO USE IT are two things I don't posess. For me it's clockwork and steam. Onward and upward in hope eternal.

I've recently re commenced construction of a 5 in gauge Britannia using castings and Perrier drawings from Norman Spink. before I go insane please does anyone have a list of the locations where errors appear on the plans. any information would be most welcome. As an aside I was looking at the catalogue which Norm gave me when I popped down to pick up my goodies and comparing present day prices with Norm's prices nine years ago I realised that everything has increased by about four hundred per cent! Perhapsl this competition we're hearing about with the energy companies is one with our suppliers to see who can increase their prices highest and quickest! or am I off on one again?

WOW! You must be me in a parallel universe. The reply about taking the dog for a walk and having a beer sounds like a good idea. Hmmm, where can I find a dog?
