Thanks for that Michael, always wondered..... the biggest beating I ever fitted was 3meters in diameter.....All hand assembled in Switzerland...... If u can remember the Mont-Blanc tunnel fire years ago....we had a number of bearing in a container stuck in the fire.....saw pictures of the container when opened.....al the plastic bearing spacers had melted and made a right mess.... we had no work for a few months..... the firm operated a timed supply system with no spares.... I told them that was crazy, especially as they had already had most of the money for the machines.... ..That’s accountants for u.....penny wise pound foolish.....me in suit"s....hahaha... |

just turned 71 and wore one for the first time a week ago......very strange....... when I lived in the UK it was a beanie or a full on waterproof hood....... sure makes a change to be in the sun virtually everyday.....thank goodness.....
the main reason for old people shrinking is the wet conditions experienced most of the time in the UK...... mind u plants wither in the sun.....hahaha........no easy way to get old gracefully I guess............ |
Thread: Painting on old galvanize |

when we could only get plain galv corrogated iron sheets for roofs in S.Africa, when the colour'd was needed we use to wash the panels down with brick acid (whatever that is) then wash with clean water..... Beware, it was a bit stinky ......... no prob with adhesion after that......we did use the proper roof paint tho... dont know about Fortress paints but Hammerite will never cross my threshold ever agin.....pure rubbish..... actually Screwfix's hammerite is / was OK when I last used it..... |

Colin, well done, always fancied something like this for my Bridgeport........ the last time I looked they / it was around the £400 mark and have other needy things to buy first...... I do have a couple of 1/4hp x 3phase motors going spare and had thought to use 1 of them with the right gearing..... plus they'd be easy to reverse direction with the approp switch gear.... something to think about when u can't sleep.......!!!!! alas, a job for another day........ it's these little (or not so little) that make life so much more enjoyable..... thanks for showing us ur work..... |

I'm quite lucky really, we get at least 20 Swallows drinking from our s/pool first thing in the morning and again between 7-8pm...... then at around 9pm the bats do the same......(dusk).. we always stop everything to watch...... which reminds me I must get on with making bat boxes....... Slightly diff... the house sparrows started to nest the end of Feb (our front porch, a large open affair)....we made shelves for them under the eves....must have had at least 8 succsesful nest's with only 4 chicks that fell out....they roost in the Olive trees nearby......at least 50 or so.... when the new barn is built it'll get Owl boxes on each end........ Life is good...... |

Thread: Basic Electrics |
14/07/2020 07:05:00 |
this is for a home workshop...... I have several machine at 3HP and 1x 5hHP, all 3 phase and they all have a plug........ correct for 3phase and size of power used.......... 3 reasons, 1, it's a pain when I need to move machines in the workshop when tied to the wall..... 2, have an inate fear of the power being switched on by mistake when moving or working within/around the machines..... 3, In France the fixed to the wall type isolater was almost €125 each x the number of machines....expensive.... so the plug n play method saved me 2/3rds of the cost........ Also in France LeGrand is the only supplier of H/D electrical gear....and they have u by the short and curley's..... so in my opinion there's nothing wrong with plugs n sockets provided they are QUALITY components....and within the amperage usage...... BUT if running near max power for long periods then a dedicated supply must be used.....say a large comp, arc welder etc.... whilst on the subject of elec........ with exceptions I prefered the old fashioned wired fuse board......esp around the arc welder etc..... where I used to live we got a lot of electrical storms, many a times I've had to replace an RCD or what ever they are called due to a close lightning strikes......once the house took a direct hit and it welded the 3 phase RCD main isolater together......that was €240 to replace, about 1/2 that in the UK....... it seems to me most elec problems in the home workshop is nobody wants to spend the money to get a DEDICATED supply instaled.....a 2.5mm extension lead just cant hack it...... keep the electrical questions comming.........

living in a warmer part of the world....... Nobody here uses mm...everything is measured in CM's...... went to the wood store, they looked at my sizes and had a look of horror....... hahaha...... luckily I work on both sids of the street....imp and Metric....... not so long ago I was in a large DIY store (outside the UK) and was accused of stealing a Stanley Fat Max tape measure..... I deliberatley made em eat cheese cos the said tape was metric and IMP.......

Lucky ol me,I have 4 Hilti SDS's......diff sizes for diff jobs..... for evil jobs always buy a new Hilti drill bit....these will punch there way thru rebar ........ Had to drill a hole into a concrete Wine Vat in France for a friend...man that was tough...never seen concrete like that befor.......hahaha |

Thread: choosing a lathe |
08/06/2020 05:40:19 |
perhaps an explanation is due, I'm a very lucky man....... I have a full profesional Machine Shop as well as the equiv for working wood...... plus all the welding equip u could ever need...... 2 car lifts and a motorcycle lift and associated tools and acc'ies....... compressors to die for etc etc....... all this in a 200m2 barn.....just being built... I have more money in kit than my house is worth........ So for me it's necc to know the value of kit...... I feel selfish at times to have this stuff (but I've worked very, very hard to get it) also feel the need to pass on it's value....... Not every Myford, Boxford is a worn out peice of junk..... |
07/06/2020 16:11:19 |
there's always a Hoo-Ha about this...... Thor is quite right BUT one proviso........ Try and get something that will sell easily when ur not around....... Forget Chinese machines generally.......look on various forums they are always in trouble.....or SEEM to be........ there are Myfords and Boxfords etc ...plus many others.....made in the UK and will ALWAYS sell....... Some say they are not the best but plenty good enough........ I have an as new Super 7 and a very nice 6" Colch Student Mk2......been told many times that they were made to a price. old fashioned and CARP......hahaha.......I just don't care......suits me..... try and find a local club....talk to people.......go look at their machines + plus kit, if u can.....if u can watch them work..... DO NOT RUSH.....and remember the lathe is comparativly cheap when u look at tooling costs..... try to find somebody selling up all their equipment......what seems expensive at the time often works out not so..... Out of interest.... I'm 20 years older than my wife and she is aware of the genuine non inflated selling prices for tools n machines..... Not to be morbid but look to the future....... unless u get stuffed into buying a wreck u'll be happy just to get into the shed......hahaha........ good luck....... OH one last thing ....have u somewhere SECURE n DRY to put said purchases......... |

Thread: Bumblebee behaviour |

Neil, when living in SW France had a Asiatic hornets nest in a tall tree....... big hanging thing, also a thing of wonder......about a meter long and almost as big around..... the local council refused to touch it because it was so big...... Had to kill em myself, which involed over 12m of 3/4 copper pipe, 1/2 lit petrol and an air compressor....... AND for the interested few.....no I didnt Petrol fumes will kill them almost instantley...... when keeping honey bee's in the UK, worked with someone from the Ministry of Agri...... when bee's had a notifiable disease the bees were trapped inside and killed with a cup of petrol..... then the hive was moved and burnt (in a safe place)... |
