6.2.21 Model Engineer.168912 Forum. Here I am again. Yes its the Adcock Mill nitemare Cannot say I have got anywhere regarding this Adcock Mk1 Horiz/Vert mill of mine. I was a fool to buy a pile of parts stored in a shed Months later finding out the top arm was missing and the tapers did not match anything I had prev encountered Started to try to overcome the issues but found for instance that top arms are ground not turned and the tapers are NS. Since then serious illness, no med help, and property faults which were covered up by teachers sellers has pout me into a hole. The machine stands outside covered by a tarp. I don't even have any machine wkg apart from hand drills and so on. Today I found the article about a sleeve to overcome some of the issues. I found them very interesting. Am thinking of attempting the get rid of this machine as I gave failed. Am hoping to get money back as its got a vertical head which must be worth money. What a shame all this failure is. Difficult to cope with sometimes particularly when wearther is bad. Never did like failure. |
Thread: Lathe Chuck Backplate Identification.Help Needed. |
19/05/2017 13:37:28 |
19.5.17. MEW FORUMS.Yes I an back again with yet another hard to solve problem.here is the question- i have a backplate which is the normal 12 cm dia to suit the normal 4J 12 cm modern chucks. The side facing the tail stock has the standard size spigot and four drilled holes to suit 12 cm (3/34) 4J chuck. However the side facing the spindle seems to me very odd. Theres a parallel unstepped center through hole of apprx 51.8mm. or 2.04 ins. dia. Surrounding that hole are three studs of 9.8 mm dia. There are three tubular nuts which have two flats each for spanner.nuts.The center distances tween studs are all 65 mm.A rough but fairly accurate idea of diag pitch of studs is 75 mm.. The backplate overall is 22mm thick. This is not home made, its been factory produced to a very high std. and theres no ID marks.I reckon this would have cost in uk about £40.00. at least. Has anyone come across this before.Have looked at Int Spindle Nose lists and cannot find the items spec.. Also baffled by not being able to find the spindle nose specs in the Int lists.which is on my Clark Chinese CL 500. This has a chuck mounting flange which is part of the spindle. Theres no tapers or keys or anything which i see in the charts. No I am not an Engineer we are working 7 days a week on Political. Legal. Medical. Govt and air crash issue so have little time except for dogged survival . Soon the UK and Europe will be made aware. No we dont have access to media. .So if we seem a bit dumb its because we are. Read somewhere a week ago that Trivithic was poverty stricken. Would not surprise me in the least.Anyway anyone got any idea what this backplate is used for please. still got the 10 yrs old problems re tooling foir Adcock Horiz No1 1942 Mill. Got frustrated and took a chance with BT 35 which has now cost £100 for 11 tools but, the taper at the large end is about 3/32 too lge.Never mind the drive dogs cos I have not managed to get that far. I reckon thats a brave near miss done in a panic or a stupid thing done in an impatient episode. .Yes I know its in fact NS thats needed but honesty is more easy to find than that.Spose I should not be too upset regarding gambling cos Maxwell lost 50. million just by trying to launch a new newspaper and he, believe it or not was an MP. That old chestnut relativity keeps cropping up. Hope someone can solve the problem of the mystery back plate.Have got a huge victoria dividing head that i keep falling over and I reckon someone might want to buy it to save my legs. Its no good foir me.Got to go to do my Ayurveda tactics.Best regards to all. |
Thread: Victoria HO Mill - INT 30 or 40? |

8.5.17 Its me again. .Re IanT. Victoria MK1.15.12.2011. Me ? South Coast.. (apologies) Have aired this before but despite kind responses I still am stuck.even worse. What pays off, persistence. or give up be a looser and move on. Yes I understand the principle of failure is the best teacher but who wants to walk around an airport instead of being on the flight to the Algarve that was booked. This topic (Ians) seems to have died. Was it resolved cos it has not done so for me. i may have contacted Ian but not sure because our filing system across three computers involving 1000s documents went out of hand ten yrs ago.My tapers issue has been going on 10yrs and the latest efforts last week has now cost me £100.00 loss.It all started when someone showed me in his shed some MC tools. Among them was a Adcock No.1 hori mill with a vert unit included. in pieces.i felt sorry for it and wham my problems were suddenly increased by a large margin.(no its not a 1E its 1942). After a while I found top arm was missing.(niitemare). Then, assuming the tapers were NT 30 i bought one and it rattled about so then I tried NT 40 and it went halfway in. Got panicky and went on 100s sites and asked loads people in the game and got either wrong advice or none. Some folks on MEW were very helpful and one person produced a NS tool. One engineer (not MEW) said stuff some packing round the INT 30. Others said i must be clueless as it was a standard taper etc.As the people were light yrs cleverer than me this was a difficult situation.regarding the tapers.I did lots measuring and it seemed to me there was a NT 35 taper listed which was 13/8 large end.But there was none avail.i then found Bt 35 and thought that was a Japanese version of NT with differences like threads and drive dogs etc.For some reason I convinced myself that at least the tapers would fit so bought 11 tools. despite that they seemed very scarce too. I sat here feeling smug and started the plan to create a top arm.But having been nearly dead thro a mystery illness i thought better, I could clean the tools so far bought..Whilst doing so I thought I would do a bit of measuring and shock horror I found a difference of about an 1/8 of an inch on the large end (1.480). compared to required 1.375. Strangely the small end is within required sz. I now think the incl angle of these is 16 degrees and the NS taper needs to be 11 degrees but I have not yet got round to that.So a major blunder this week and now the whole lot looks like scrap.I have got an NS taper somewhere but at moment cannot find it as we have major survival. threats affecting us here.Am wondering about re sizing the wrong devices but have no data to go on re the difficulties.like hardness. I read recently that in Ayurvedic and other principles that luck is the primary need of the human at and subsequent to birth.IIts been known 3000 yrs and apparently many people tried to suppress the knowledge by force. We looked into the ideas more deeply and from what we have found out it seems like the present society is going wrong.Yes skill pays but I know loads people who are fairly clueless and take risks yet seem to win most of the time.I could, up to now never understand the latter but do know. Of course theres more to it than what we put here but we keep that to our selves (at the moment) Our priority today is,- Was the issue re the Viictoria horiz Mill resolved and if so how.We dont do much comp work (re Eng) so might not be back here for a while.Could anyone who is also struggling to survive contact us as we could be very useful. Thanks all.(anyone want a vintage mill, A load of very nice BT 35 tools..? Etc). Anyone know the quickest non painful way to get us out of this area. Urgent.Has Ian got round the problem ?? |

I bought this in pieces then found out firstly that the top arm was nissing so am trying to find steel round bar about meter long by 2.5in nominal dia.I realise it wont be ground but will have to make do.The finished dia needs to be 2.496ins. Secondly and even worse the taper sockets throughout dont adhere to any taper tooling that i can find.in uk The tapers are bigger than INT3 and smaller than INT4.The included angle is same as INT but mass is different.also slightly shorter overall. An astute person via home w-shop provided me with a sample and he says they were either made or provided by Alfred Herbert. Its taken me three yrs to locate an identical as far as i know taper in USA called collis Quick Fit which is common there. not here. This means im stuck. I read somewhere that its poss to turn down INT tool tapers as they are surface hardened only. But,others say they cant be cut. In any case all my equipt is down at moment and im too ill to tackle it. Cant understand why a uk tool maker would devise or fit non usual tapers in a war situation. I feel like giving in and it makes me feel ill to be defeated.I spose the INT 4 could be put in a furnace but dont know enough about the process of annealing hard stee. What amazes me is how litle info there is on maching hard steel.I thought that was the purpose of carbide but seems its mainly used for high speed production hi-temp work.Im baffled.disillusioned.Can anyone help.Im not a scrounger.Yours 01329841173 all days/hours but often dont hear it. Erica/john. The mill is Adcock/Shipley 1AS 1943 not ES. Location hants uk.

im baffled.Ive got a Type 1 Adcock/shipley horiz mill,Its dated 1942 october. Its got a vertical adaptor as well. So, whats the problem?? The problem is all of the taper sockets are a strange size, they are same included angle as INT BUT they are in between the INT diameters. An engineer said same taper different mass..By chance someone sent me a sample toolholder and it was made by alf herbert. Is it possible icould cut down INT tool tapers to fit or are they too hard. Also need top arm round bar nom 2.5ins x 1meter. HELP FOR CASH PLS.(someone said INT tools are only case hard.). A bit depressed what with illness etc.01329 841173 hours all
