Thread: 6" traction engine drive gears |

Ok, Lots of good advise there. I really am looking for a cheap solution, so at the moment the lead option is to get some blanks flame cut and machine myself.
Thanks to all who have responded. |

All, I am currlntly building a 6" Burrell and am trying to source drive gears economically. The crank and second shaft are approx 10" apart (there is some flexibility in this dimension as I have not drilled the horn plates yet. I am after approx 3:1 and 4:1 ratios. So ideally i need 4" and 16" gear (4:1), and 5" and 15" (3:1) gears. I have seen the price some suppliers have been asking and refuse to pay that much so I am looking at allsorts of alternatives (such as roller shutter door suppliers etc steel or cast considered, other similar ratios and centre bore etc considered (I have scoured the local scrap yards but feel I could be at it for years before finding what I want).. Has anyone got any cheapish solutions Incidentally I have spare flywheel casting (spoked) if anyone is interested (approx 2ft dia) Thanks Chris Tel: 019467 25755 |

Richard, Did you ever sort the gears? I am after getting some gears and looking at options. Not sure I could machine something this dia, or have the skill to get it right without making 5 sets?
I have bought a part complete engine and am keen to talk to someone who has been through the process, would you fancy a chat?
