Thread: Black 5 in 5" finally has beaten me
29/08/2016 19:12:40

Well for months been trying to sort water problems on my black 5.

I have changed all clack Valves as the new ones where leaking and blowing back into tender.

The injector will not pick up changed the valve at top lowered the feed pipe then fitted new injector made sure got good feed water to injector still not working.

Now just run Loco on Air to check axle pump working got good feed fitted new Clack valve plus all new pipping.

Also when Loco gets up to pressure wheels lock I have now fitted 4 new bypass valves although the Manuel ones seemed to work ok.

I have done every thing I can the ball is free in axle pump took pipe of outlet water was pumping ok.

No ideas left

Thank you it failed again through my piping i have the clack valves on side of boiler the injectors would not pick up at all. i have now started re piping the whole thing i and putting a clack valve in front of Injector also one from axle pump on delivery pipe and one on axle pump as pipe was red hot and guys at club think this might be the problem.

I have decided that i will only use one injector as they say to many different feeds makes load more problems.

Hoping this will finally be the last thing to sort if it was not for the Injector not working everything else looked fine (i hope)

Had so many problems building a lot of my own as a new to model engineering.

Had so many problems to many to list but last one was faulty clack valves.

Took me ages to find the problem but then the batch they had ran out and been waiting weeks for replacement's.

Steamed without Tender today they now seal thank you for the loan of one till i get my new one back.

Just hoping that injectors work ok now the rest has been fixed.

hope to try it wed at club if it does not rain !!!!!

trouble is now loosing interest after so many problems think i should have maybe took up another Hobby.

Hang in there Ron! Some people spend 40 years building a loco than never get round to steaming it. At least you are on the home straight now.

Neil

Well Neil bit of good news a friend had spare 1\4 clack same as mine just filled boiler 3\4 full put a fire in her she soon got to 90 and no leaks.

i just need to try it with tender on make sure the injectors work and might be ready to try it.

surprised how things can change with just a little luck.

yes i feel Polly have been let down by their supplier cant fault how they immediately checked them and said they would replace them just the amount of weeks waiting for new ones

25/07/2016 14:22:12

Well the replacement clack valve from Polly was also faulty seems like they had a bad batch.

Been waiting weeks for replacements. still waiting so frustrating waiting so long was so surprised they did not have the facility to re seat the bottom of clack.

Been in touch again today and they are still waiting for stock.

The time trying to solve problem then after trying to get the new ones has really surprised me.

Most of summer nearly gone and still not been able to use my Loco.

trouble is now loosing interest after so many problems think i should have maybe took up another Hobby.

Fingers crossed soon be here

Hi Guys took Clacks back to Polly so they could check them for me they found both leaking at 40 psi they had one in stock changed that and sending the other in about 3 weeks when new stock arrives'

Fingers crossed now hoping soon be running.

No I ordered stainless balls

Ron

21/06/2016 08:22:27

They have to be horizontal for them to work. Their is no Spring it's just the pressure in the boiler that keeps them closed.

Hi Paul yes I have ordered new stainless balls just in case. They look fine but think safer to fit new ones. The strange part is it's leaking the same as it was before cleaning and seating balls. More strange as both are brand new.Ron

Hi guys got a problem with my inline clack valves.

they are not sealing can hear bubbling in tender plus steam always coming back through both injectors.

i have took them both of cleaned in citric acid first then tapped the ball to make sure the seat is ok.

blowing down seems to seal but hot water still going back into tender.

The clacks are new from Polly and fitted horizontal cant see why with the pressure of the boiler why they don't work.

are their different types of clacks my feeds go on the top of the boiler hence why i used horizontal clacks any ideas please

Thread: Black 5 blast pipe
04/06/2016 10:40:47

I made mine with several ends to screw into blast pipe.

I tried to steam it but my injectors stopped working so I had to stop before running.

I have a problem with my tender I bought pipe work wrong also leaking.

Can't wait to work on it but just has a pace maker fitted said no lifting for 6 weeks.

Soon be working I hope

Time to make it what I need but going into Hospital for a pace maker next week so got to slow down for a bit.

Not sure sure I would tell on rolling road to driving it.

19/05/2016 18:35:41

Well due to heavy rain never got chance to try Loco so be at least 2 to 3 weeks before I can next try it.

At least it's in the trailer already loaded up ready to go.

Hi Neil Julian says it means 420 th he also says its to big going to try a 5/16 then an 11/32 I have made several so I can keep changing just needed a starting point also found it should be 2" from top of taper to top blast nozzle.

Thank goodness for this site to point us in the right direction.

Best Regards

Ron

Hi looking for some info on blast pipe for my 5" black 5.

I did a couple laps on it but it seems to be lacking power.

At the moment it has an 1/2 hole in blast nozzle but I have threaded it to be able to change.

It has 1 5/8 Pistons I would like a starting point if poss as on the plans it just says 42 !!

Also from top of blast pipe to petticoat pipe what distance should it be.

Hope some one can help please
