Thread: Quality of back issues
20/07/2018 07:08:19

Ok thanks

Issue 4404, pages 636/637 in particular

Issue 4165 page 130/131 in particular

19/07/2018 20:06:10

Has anyone else had trouble with what I assume is the poor quality of the scanning of the ME back issues.

I have downloaded a few issues because there are constructional articles and drawings of models of interest to me. However the text and drawing scan quality is so poor that the typed text is just about readable, and I can't make out the drawing dimensions or text. Surely the point of the having the back issues is to be able to use them, not have to purchase the back issues just for legible information?

Thread: What IS Gunmetal?...
04/04/2016 00:31:42

Are they using a picture of the cast iron castings, where they are available as a CI or Gunmetal part?

Thread: Free hobbed worm wheel
04/04/2016 00:28:11

When looking at UK suppliers, it's around £250 for a 6" worm and wheel plus the VAT!!! I can get a 6" rotary table for around £150. Ideally I'd find a second hand 12" plus diameter rotary table and use the bits out of that if I can't get the required accuracy free hobbing

03/04/2016 23:27:40

Has anyone made a large (around 12" dia) free hobbed worm wheel?? I'm after one for an indexer and would like to know what the accuracy of one free hobbed this size is, or am I better buying a rotary and using the worm and wheel out of that? I want to use it for indexing when gear cutting

Thread: s275 grade steel
08/01/2014 22:29:40

I used S275 for my side frames. It is ideal stuff to use, and machines, drills, taps, etc ok. This is the grade of steel normally supplied in black plate form for general steel work, and used for probably most structural steelwork in the UK. And also what most laser cutters use in the +3mm sizes of steel sheet. Best way is to find a stockholder who will sell you offcuts. If you can get "pickled and oiled", it is black steel plate that has had the black scale removed by pickling, so you get a nice piece of bright steel without all the distortion worries of using bright

Thread: Fit/clearance between axleboxes and horns
06/01/2014 17:31:57

I have finished machining the separate horn castings, and fitted these to my sideframes, and now come to fitting the axleboxes. How much clearance should I allow between the horns and axleboxes?? Also my horns do not appear to be exactly 90 deg to the frames, they vary by about 1-1.5 thou out of parallel, is this acceptable???

Thread: What is the history of the large rolls on the home page, where the join ME website box is
28/11/2013 00:35:44

Oh right! I did visit the dockyards a good few years ago when I was quite young, found it interesting then so will have to go back sometime. I zoomed in on the pic and the maker is Hugh Smith and Co. They still exist making the same sort of machinery.

Still hoping to find some pics of Cammell Lairds armour plate rolling mill if anyone has anything???

27/11/2013 19:34:04

Painted a light green colour, there are a number of tables and chairs in front of them.

Where are these rolls???

On another note does anybody have any pics of Cammell Lairds rolling mill, powered by the River Don engine?

Thread: Poor quality digital back issues
27/11/2013 19:09:09

I have recently taken out a digital and print subscription, one reason being access to the ME archive material. However when viewing some of the back issues the quality of the digitising is vey poor, photos are grainy and the drawings are totally illegible.

The issue seems to be with only certain magazines, for example, the building the Stuart pillar drill series. Part 1, drawings are just a few dot and dashes, can't even see what the drawing is mean't to be of!!! But several parts later the drawings are perfectly clear. A lot of the older issues are excellent quality, it just seems a few have got through with quality issues. Having paid for a subscription to be able to view back issues I think something needs to be done to rectify this please!!!

Thanks

Which edition of Model Engineer did this series start in?

Thread: 5" gauge Mountaineer
14/10/2012 19:06:49

I see from a google search it appears several 5" gauge versions of Mountaineer have been built. Is this a specific design for 5" gauge, or just a scaled up 3.5" gauge version?? Does anybody make castings or have casting patterns for this loco in 5" gauge?
