I use one to stop dust. Unfortunately a cover won't stop rust. You either need to use a dehumidifier in the workshop, or use some form of anti rust liquid on the lathe. Arc Euro do such an item amongst others.

My vote is for good quality carbon steel taps. They cut better than HSS . Having said that they loose their edge quicker than HSS.

Carbon steel taps of good quality are cheaper than HSS. So unless you use the taps day in day out, the carbon steel ones are a better bet.

I am not knocking QCTPs, I use mine most of the time. I am simply saying that I get more deflection for a given tool load. than I do with my Myford 4 way tool post.

As to the convenience or otherwise of the two systems, I am making no judgement. That is up to the individual user.

I am afraid it isn't theory. My Myford QCTP is less rigid than my Myford 4 way toolpost. Simple fact!. I can load the tool and note the deflection. Deflection is larger on the QCTP.

As John Baron rightly says,,the problem is the amount of overhang that some (QCTP) have.

If you have both systems, then do a comparative test and let everyone know the result.

I have both an original Myford 4 way tool post and a Myford QCTP set up. The QCTP gets more use because I am lazy, but the 4 way tool holder is appreciably more rigid and gets used on the more difficult jobs.

I ordered a set of taps yesterday (Friday) at 3.00 pm. Arrived this morning (Saturday) at 10.am.

!3 amp fuses, as in plug tops are not quick blow. They will also pass a tad more than 13 amps on a steady basis, without blowing. Did some real world tests to check this, so don't throw specifications at me!

NiCd batteries are still widely available. Batteriesplus have tagged 2400 ma NiCds for just over £2 each for 10 (gives you 12 volts.) The snag with NiMh batteries is that they have less current output than NiCds so they are not ideal for things like battery drills. You will get less torque with NiMh batteries.

As far as charging NiMh batteries with a NiCd charger, it will work, but take a much longer charging time.

I am trying to think of the name for the following item. Short piece of round rod with a shoulder at one end and a cross drilled hole at the other. The hole usually takes a split pin and retains a washer on the rod.

They are widely used to fix parts together. I have some aluminium ones on my Bergen rucksack, holding webbing to frame.

I simply can't remember what these fixings are called, help please!

Hello Bob, that is interesting I now have an A section belt running happily on the 2" pulley, Maybe working well because I have used a notched pulley which bend more easily.

Where did you find the 3" minimum diameter? Please don't say Kempes handbook!!!!

You need to take up the term "Micro compressor" with Cosmos. Their description, not mine. It is rated at 120 psi has a 20 litre tank and a 1.5 Kw motor.

Thanks for that information Clive, it makes sense to me. The compressor unit is sealed (quote from blurb on the tank) and according to the same blurb on the tank it is " oil less". Despite the claim that it is a sealed unit, there appear to be enough bolts on show to strip it down!

I have come by one of the above compressors, which are of Italian manufacture. It came without a pressure regulator on the output, which isn't too surprising, what does surprise me is that there is no pressure switch and no sign of one ever being fitted from new.

I am not a compressor expert, is this normal for a small compressor?

The normal way of securing a toroidal transformer is through the hole in the middle of the toroid, so may not be a good place. Also the transformer generates heat which isn't the best thing in the world for an electrolytic capacitor.

Otherwise go ahead and put the capacitor there, it isn't going to matter a great deal and there is no "electronic" reason why not.

Just be careful when securing the toroidal transformer that you don't create a "shorted turn" . Easy to do if you are not aware of this potential problem. It won't do the transformer any good at all!

For what it is worth, most etch primers for aluminium contain phosphoric acid as the active ingredient. Being a cheapskate I usually prime aluminium with phosphoric acid and then just paint with any old paint. It seems to work well as the oldest aluminium to have had this treatment is 30 years old now, with no sign of peeling.

As for advertising even your approximate location on the net. I don't think that is very smart with all the rogues around. That is partly why we have a PM system..
