Thread: supercharged V12 2 stroke |
14/12/2014 07:25:25 |
OK soooo....................... I managed to find a few more roundtoits and have finished fitting the super charger rotor vanes to the rotor. They all have a nice and free sliding fit and good end clearance, made all the gaskets for the two end covers and the manifolds. Below are some photos showing the finished blower assembly fitted to the rest of the engine.
This photo is a view down the carb intake hole and shows the vane in the slot. Once I got the whole assembly together I couldn't resist trying the supercharger out to see how much blow it would give. I hooked up the starter motor to it and there was a very definate blowing of the air coming out through the sump holes in the bottom of the block!!!!!!!!!! Fantastic I would say!!! Quite a loud noise from the blower so I think it might have a very interesting sound when its running. So the next step in the construction is the finishing of the liners. I have started lapping these using the same technique that Ramon describes in his ETA build thread. I have used this system before when i made the V8 (here's a link to the youtube video of the v8 being hand started for anyone interested. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np7zvGrc3U0 ) The liners are firstly honed and then lapped with 14 micron diamond paste, then cleaned. When they are all at this stage the lap is then cleaned and reloaded with 0.5 micron diamond paste and all the liners are then brought up to a mirror finish before fitting the pistons to each individual liner making up 12 matched piston liner assemblies.
Here's a couple of photos of the start of the lapping process. Hope this keeps the interest satisfied for a few more days, hopefully i will be able to finish the lapping of all the liners in the next couple of days, untill then.......................................................................

Well it's been awhile i know but I been kinda busy, but i finally found a roundtooit for this V12 project. Been working on the supercharger recently and have just finished machining the rotor vane slots into the rotor, took a bit of fiddling around to setup but got there in the end. All that's left to do now is polish the vane slots to allow a slippery slippery fit of the phenolic vanes. here's some update photo's
Hope to have it all done in the next few days or so...............................................hopefully lol Dean

Thanks for the info and encouragement, must confess the latest health drama has taken a bit more of a toll on me than I cared to admit. I find it difficult to keep moving, just not so much energy back yet. Will be a little bit before anything happens again I think but hopefully not to long before progress is restored to the shed and consequently the v12 build. Till then I'm resting up. cheers Dean |

Thanks guys, yes i am feeling much perkier now. Sometimes life throws you a bit of a curve ball, good thing i have an excellent catcher looking after me. dean |

OK so i have a fairly decent excuse for the delay in updating this thread this time, called a burst appendix!!! which as it turns out was nearly responsible for me checking out of life way too early!!!!! Thankfully i have learned to listen to my wife in times of crisis and let her take me to the docs who immediately put me in an ambulance and sent me on my way to hospital. Surgery on the same afternoon saw me alive but stuck in hospital for the next week, but alive none the less. so just before i went to hospital i had started to make an engine assembly stand so i didn't need four pairs of hands to put these engines together. Below are some photos of said stand with the V12 fitted and undergoing final assembly. hope to have this engine finished and running by the end of November, here's hoping anyway. cheers for now dean
The brass gear looking thing is just a fitting to enable turning the engine over by hand without having the prop fitted. Makes life a bit easier when assembling the engine. dean Edited By dean clarke 2 on 09/10/2014 01:03:00 |

hey guess what? ................................ It's only been a couple of days since my last update ha ha ha...... So i have done the crankcase mods required to let the conrods rotate full circle without collecting anything on their way round, and it didn't even take me weeks to get there, YAY !!!!!!!!! so now i am honing the liners and lapping to final polished finish. this will be to a mirror finish.
So I relieved the top portion of the crankcase bore and also both side angles to give the extra room required. Turned out to be an easy fix and very straight forward. Now quickly quickly back into the shed before i'm noticed inside and get absconded into something else. bye for now dean |

Just thought I'd put up this photo of all the parts made so far for the v12. I have stripped the engine and am now carrying out the mods to the crankcase to accomodate the rods . The next task after that will be to hone and lap all the liners and then make and fit the pistons to each of the rods and their mated liners. After that will be cutting the slots in the supercharger rotor and making and fitting the vane blades. Then the carbs will be finished off complete with the fuel feed rail. The last task I think will be making the ignition rail for the glo plugs then fingers crossed to the start up time. cheers for now

Well, Ok, so its been a little more than a few days since I last updated this thread and so I will start with apoligies to those of you who are suffering posteria pain from prolonged perching on the edge of chairs and also to those who have had the misfortune of having lost their balance from said procarious perch and fallen to the floor in waiting. Life does tend to get in the way of such fun things as shed time but then we all must suffer the trials and tribulations that deprive us of model building in some form or other, LOL. Well i have been able to finish making the cylinder lap and the piston lap as the photo below will show. I have also test fitted the conrods to the crank to make sure they turn freely on the shaft and also don't foul the case in any places. guess what? i have to modify the case just slightly to avoid the rods collecting it on one side of the revolution circle. Oh well. The other thing that s has been a major consumer of spare time over these last few weeks has been the total revamp of the workshop! basiclly i just got sick of spending more time looking for a tool than i spent using by about 600 percent........ usually the fastest way to find it was buy another, funny how that works aye!!!. well i haven't quite finished but I think we are mostly there, YAY now its back to making some swarf, should have achieved a bit more on the engine build this coming week. Here's a couple of photos of the workshop. cheers for now bye dean

Well i managed a small amount of time in the shed to work on the v12 project this last week and have managed to make the cylinder liner lap and am now making the piston lap. then i will start on the actuall pistons themselves, will update with photos in the next couple of days. cheers for now dean |

You and me both. Gets quite frustrating not being able to spend the time working on it. Life just gets in the way too much sometimes, oh well keep plodding along. Dean Edited By dean clarke 2 on 12/07/2014 01:33:55 |

Well as it's been some time since i posted any sort of update so i figured it was probably about time i got to it. Soooo, here's the latest development on my blown V12 2 stroke engine build. After a great deal of sidetracking and slaving i finally slipped the collar long enough to sneak into the shed and finish the set of conrods and gudgeons, photos below. Next its laps for the liners and pistons, then make and fit the pistons.
Cheers for now Dean Edited By dean clarke 2 on 11/07/2014 13:12:21 |

Well it's been insanely busy round here lately so not much time has been allowed in the shed but i have never the less been able to make a start on the conrods. photos below show the progress to date.
next step is to deburr them and radius the big end, drill and tap the bolt holes, seperate the big and cap and ream to final size. then its onto seperating the conrods from their partners and radiusing the little ends. then onto the pistons and carbs, fuel rail and ignition rails, plug inserts and then the breathing of life into the beast. cheers for now Dean |

Yay a bit more time in the shed and a bit more completed on the v12 project. I have managed to complete the tank assembly and have got a good way towards getting the finish put on the whole mount/tank assembly. A friend of mine made the suggestion that engine turning would look rather nice on the two brass sides of the tank mount, turns out he was right ( i reckon anyway) As this was my first foray into this kind of finishing a bit of time on the net and a few experiments later i found that a piece of dowl turned to the required dia and fitted to the mill worked well enough. I couldn't resist assembling the engine and mounting it with the tank etc to see what it looked like. Below are a couple of photos of the test assembly. cheers for now dean
Now it really is onto the rods and pistons. Dean |

Ok so got a bit of time in the shed today and made a start on the fuel tank assembly.I decided that a tear drop shape for the tank would look quite nice so went ahead and started making this. Below are some progress shots and i think it will look very nice mounted on top of the brass side panels, these will end up machine turned to give that nice swirl effect on the side panels. The tank and all fittings will be bright polished. thanks dean
The two small holes in this last shot are for the fittings of the sight glass fuel level gauge. Fuel feed line and vent pipe still need to be added and also the mounting brackets.

Yea maybee i'll laminate a walnut and white ash or red mahogany and white ash with nice brass protectors, that would look great. I think i'll concentrate on getting it running first though. Couldn't resist a couple of display stand progress shots so here they are. Working on the tank at the moment. cheers dean

Well been rather productive over the last few days and have managed to complete the engine mounts and lugs. These are now ready to be fitted to the red mahogany stand and photos will follow as soon as i have the stand finished. Then onto the tank assembly and then back to making engine parts. cheers Should look reasonably good when its all done, here's hoping anyway. Dean Edited By dean clarke 2 on 29/04/2014 11:05:19 |

Well got a bit sidetracked on the v12 project, (well kind of). Thought i'd start on the engine mounting system for a bit of a change from engine parts and wanted to set this engine up on an aircraft style of engine mount. These will be mounted onto a firewall looking stand which will have a fuel tank and ignition system installed as part of the display mount. here's a couple of photos of the mounts at the first stage, ready for cleaning up and painting. cheers dean |
