Thread: An old Shaper found in Phuket Town

There was a planer where i served my time. Only seen it used a couple of times while i was there. Invented by Nasmyth i seem to recall, or was that the shaper ?

...

... in my opinion the problem lies with the human rights bullshit, ...

Specifically which of the Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights do you object to? They seem harmless enough to me.

Inverting a few articles might give a better sense of what they're about, for example:

  • No one has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
  • Everyone shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be allowed in all their forms.
  • Everyone shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

No doubt Human Rights are imperfect but I submit we are better off with them than without.

Dave

So would you be all for the returning ISIS fighters to be given a council flat and generous social welfare payments ? Because thats what the liberal human rights nuts are fighting for.

My anger is directed not just to the verminous scum that have done this but to the "leaders" and lawmakers of our country who encourage this anti social filth by insufficient punishment wherever and whenever it happens.

A very sad Rik

Its not just that, they encourage breeding of such rubbish by generous welfare payments. I see it all the time, have a kid and get payments you can blow on cheap beer, weed and gambling.

What a negative and aimless little bunch of fools to destroy peoples possessions. I suppose a very stiff binding over awaits in court face 5

Just seen this on another site. How sad and pointless.

Thread: 7/8" x 5 tpi acme threaded rod
07/05/2019 20:46:09

The thread is right hand, which makes things slightly easier. I would prefer to keep the same size thread as the original as the dials would be miles out otherwise. I suppose i could use a dro but was not intending to. Thanks to all for the links, i will either email or ring them over the next few days and see what i can chase up. The nut i can make up myself. Whats the best brass/bronze for that ?

06/05/2019 23:21:50

Bought a Jones and shipman 540 surface grinder recently, its old but complete and in good condition overall. However the crossfeed screw and nut are worn, which i have been told is usual, as the powerfeed "kicks" the screw when powerfeed is engaged.

They are available from jubilee mac, for nearly £600 ! So i want to make a new screw and nut. It would make life easier if i could buy the threaded rod rather than having to screwcut one.

Anyone know where i might be able to buy threaded rod in this size ?

Many thanks.

Thread: Notre Dame
16/04/2019 23:21:20

I am from Ireland, and while yes a tiny minority of the catholic church did horrific things, a huge amount of them did hard and good work in working class areas, often for very little thanks or recognition, and was one of the glues that bound society together. But as usual the majority pays for the sins/crimes of the minority. Is the bbc a paedophile organisation because of savile, harris etc ? They were getting huge salaries from the taxpayers, to produce rubbish programmes and rape youngsters.

Nearly any group who have been around for a long time has questions to answer, no more than the royal family, look back a bit at the dreadful way people who displeased them were treated during the last thousand years. The bloody tower, hanging drawing and quartering, pitch capping, the rack etc. The royals under Henry the eighth, profited hugely from the catholic church when he seized their lands and property.

No group should be free from criticism, but if you are going to sling muck, please sling it equally.

As for the cathedral, what a terrible thing to happen to such a historic and wonderful building, terrible, just as it would be if St.Pauls were to have burned during the blitz. Notre dame is owned by the republic of France, So it is their property and they are responsible for the damage repairs.

I've been following this on Twitter, terrible thing to happen, but entirely preventable. I can think of three recent fires involving 'national treasures' all caused by poor fire controls during restoration.

Windsor Castle fire, Charles Rennie Macintosh Art School in Glasgow and The Cutty Sark.

Surely they must be worth protecting with better fire precautions?

And the National Motorcycle Museum at Beaulieu a few years ago. Started by a cigarette butt in a skip of air-con filters but not a sprinkler in sight.

Wasn't that the place in Birmingham, well between Birmingham and Coventry ?

Jubilee mac in Derby ? I know they recondition surface grinders, might be worth a phone call, or they may be able to put you onto someone who can do what you need.

Thread: Scaling dimensions
25/03/2019 21:18:00

Well it will be upscaling i will be doing most likely, i see a design for a simple steam engine, but its a bit small for my machines and i prefer larger models anyway.

25/03/2019 20:04:39

Is scaling a drawing up or down a simple matter of multiplying or dividing the given dimensions by a set figure, say 2x or 4x ?

Or is it as i suspect more involved than that ?

and there was me getting the toast and salt and pepper ready! wink my favourite as a kid!

Anyone else got some non PC foods from the past?

Martin

Black puddin' and tripe ? These soft modern types don't know the joy of a good fry-up with plenty of black and white puddin' and a load of fried bread. You might live longer by not eating food like that, but i cannot think why you would want to

Thread: Trends in Radio Ads

I find the most obtrusive ads are those on Classic FM - put me off listen to the programme.

Pity, as its a good station. I also like radio 4 xtra. Especially if they are doing really old stuff, Sherlock Holmes stories, Hancocks half hour, Parseley sidings, The navy lark etc. The modern stuff is too blue and too crude.

Thread: Micrometer woes
27/01/2019 15:38:12

Mitutoyo tools are excellent, but their boxes are rubbish. The cream coloured boxes that their micrometers come in are extremely brittle, i have several where they have cracked or broken, leaving the tools open to damp and dirt, not good.

The felt in the micrometer boxes, is in the lid, and yes i have several that have turned to crumb rubber, leaving the mic covered in little black specks.

I also have a metric mitutoyo depth mic, that came in a nice wooden box. It was in perfect shape, but i went to use it one day and was disgusted to discover the depth rods covered in rust. I had to clean them off and some were pitted. Things like wood and felt absorb moisture and rust tools.

Someone told me mothballs in tool cases resist rust, or maybe things like vp90, as used in gunsafes and things like that.

When I was a kid we built crystal sets, and late 50s got some OC 70 transistors, so made a simple amplifier with a single OC 70, then Dad suggested build another crystal set with broad tuning, instead of the single diode, a bridge made of 4 germanium diodes and an electrolytic capacitor across it, adjust the circuit for the greatest out put, and connect it to the radio. You need 2 good aerials. The main problem with simple radios is the headphones, in general you just can't get high impedance phones.

When I built my first (only) single valve(DAF 91) radio, what to do about HT battery. Built a power supply with a transistor oscilator, feed that through a small low voltage transformer, rectify the HT, and smooth it, and out comes the 90V that I wanted, all from a little 9V battery.

Yes i did that too, making crystal sets. Ladybird did a little book on it, all the bits held to a piece of pine board (pre-mdf) with brass screws (remember them) and screw cups. I believe pow's made sets using a piece of coke, which was scratched at with a wire until a signal was received.

Kids don't make things like that anymore, they sit gawping at mobile phone screens now.
