Thread: Drawing
15/07/2013 13:59:16

Can anyone recommend a drawing package, that is free or a reasonable price that works, I used to work with Auto Cad so am a bit spoilt, but 3D is not essential , but drawing lines and circles to an accurate dimension is. Thanks

Thread: Degreaser

Hi Graeme, you use the term Braze. Preparation for brazing could be different from silver soldering. Personally, I would not use emery cloth to clean copper as a preparation method as the soft metal would become impregnated with the emery, steel - probably OK. Gunk leaves a filmed surface in my experience. What material are you making the boiler from ?

Bob

Thanks for your reply, the boiler is copper and yes I should have used the term silver solder, c4 and tenacity flux, I was in engineering for a long part off my life and used a hot degreaser bath for all brazing and soldering work. And perhaps I am looking at this to hard, but to cut the story short I rang the old boss and have a pint of acetone coming my way, yes I do know how dangerous this stuff is.

Can anyone tell me where I can obtain degreasing agent, I am ready to braze my. Boiler for the mini but can't find a degreaser help

Thread: Traction engine
03/03/2013 16:29:54

I have been in engineering for a lot of years, this doesn't make me a expert , or a master model maker but I can turn and mill to a high standard. But as far as steam I am a novice. Thanks anyway.

Thanks mike but I do not have an account with E Bay and when I tried to create one it just didn't work, waiting for my son to help on next visit.

Thanks for all the help, I think it's the mini for me, and yes sandy I have done similar with tools etc, it destroys your faith for a while . Jason there seems to be two traction engines in your links what is the model which isn't painted.

Thanks new to this didn't realize the mini wasn't scale. Will look into your suggestions

02/03/2013 15:42:30

Many thanks for your suggestion .I will contact Blackgates Monday with regards to the 1" scale mini , as checking my lathe I could machine the wheels myself

thanks again

Hi I am new to this forum, and the problem I have is where to obtain quality drawings for a traction engine in 1" to 1/12" scale. I have a small lathe and mill but my problem is heart failure so cannot lift heavy objects hence small scale, any advice would be aappreciated

Thread: Machining Titanium
14/06/2012 15:16:32

Yes you can weld Ti you need to have a gas shield that covers the back of the weld as well as the front,

you will also need gas to cover the heat affected zone until it is cool you will need a good quality T.I.G welding M/C. Machining treat it like cooper for speeds and feeds, tapping if say you are tapping a 6mm thread drill size would normaly be 5mm I would go for 5.2mm drill using a machine tap and a thick cutting compound helps take it very easy clear the tap often of swarf .As for cutting fluid water based cutting fluid is best and plenty of it, also When cutting Ti if you use carbide tips the carbide absorbs Ti after a period of use I got near to size with H.S.S tooling and changed to carbide
