Thanks Ian , i’m currently building Bat in O gauge so will take your advice with the hss |

Thanks for the advice I like the idea of the easy sharpening of the eccentric engineering tool holder but I’ll probably stick to hss for now. Although will my insert tools be better to get under the skin of a casting or should I stick to my hss? |

I currently use hss and have a few carbide insert tools that came with my lathe. However in my quest to fill my workshop with goodies I’ve been wondering if it’s worth buying a tangential tool holder? My next job is turning some loco wheels from castings would these be the tools for the job? Will |
Thread: Slitting saw speeds |

Hi all, another question to help get me on my way with my LBSC Bat loco. I wish to cut slots in brass with a 63mm x 1.5mm slitting saw . Having never used one before what speed should I be cutting at? |

I’ll post some pictures as I go, so far I’ve drilled the frames and am awaiting delivery of a slitting saw to cut the buffer beam slots and the axle boxes. |

I thought i’d start small and work up! I’d love to build in 5” gauge but I just fancied ago at this particular engine . At least then I can persuade the household authorities I can build such things ! Oh and the utility room hasn’t been taken over by machinery for no reason 😇 |

Thanks Phil, as yet the only method I have to cut the slot accurately is a 1/16” slot drill, looks like I’ll have to make another investment. |

Hi all, after many years of reading the forum (joined in 2012) I’ve finally managed to set up my small workshop. My current project is LBSCs BAT for which I have the frames and castings from GLR Kenions , I’m a little unsure about cutting the 1/16” slots in the buffer beams as the frame thickness is 0.056” is would this be be to big a slot? Now I’ve finally started I’ll probably have loads more questions to ask. Hopefully this project goes well then I can move on to a bigger scale😀 |
Thread: Suitable lathe for 3 1/2" gauge loco building |

Thanks for the advice . What would be the benefit of a Myford over a new lathe like the Warco WM180? Edited By Will D on 01/05/2012 20:54:17 |

As a complete beginner to model engineering what is a suitable lathe to build 3 1/2" gauge steam engines ? I am on a limited budget bearing in mind I have to equipt myself with various other tools . Also what is a good beginners project? |
