This is what sticks out of the driving end of my lathe. The spindle speeds are determined by, firstly, a 3-phase motor powered from a VFD, thence through a selection of gears (6 available speeds) and the drive then exits the rear of the headstock as indicated. The rotation of the gearbox output shaft is not 1:1 with the spindle. Therin lies the first problem. I have come up with a design of drive as shown in the next photo to obtain a direct count of the spindle rotations.
