Following a strip-down and inspection, I found that I'd machined the input shaft thrust bearing to a thickness of 2.5mm instead of 2mm. Being steel, a session on the surface grinder soon sorted that out and I'm pleased to report that the holes in the base plate now lined up with those in the vertical supports. I was also able to relocate the misplaced hole for the reverse idler gear. The result is, by its very nature, not pretty, but is barely visible in the assembled state. If you didn't know it was there, you probably wouldn't see it. Of course, I know it's there!
