The first job was to increase the depth of the recess on the underside of the cross slide. Not by much, about 0.5mm. This gave me an indication of how easy or otherwise the rest of the machining was going to be. As it happens, not too bad at all, but my, that cast iron dust is a so-and-so. Good job I've got a Vax wet and dry vacuum in the garage.
