A thick circular steel block with layer of aluminium oxide paper bonded to it is used to smooth out and reduce the milling marks. The steel block is released from the chuck and rests on the boiler surface under its own weight, the chuck is retightened and the sanding begins. Although rather crude, these methods worked and the machined face is now flat.
