Turned this way, with the sliding block locked, the top slide and/or toolpost is brought into contact with the angled arm and thus is set at the required angle. Note: this pobably won't be accurate enough for morse tapers or other small angles, but could be good enough for setting over the topslide for threading, for example. More experiments required.
