When I bought the Atlas 618 a few years ago, the cap was missing from one of the headstock oil cups. For fear of introducing foreign material into the oil channel, I never bothered to replace the oil cup. The previous owner had the hole plugged with a small bolt. After I removed both bearings from my Myford Speed 10 spindle, I cut off the bearing cages using my Dremel tool and cut off wheel. I wanted to retain the raceways and cones for precision packing. I was also left with the roller bearings which I had no immediate use for other than catapult (slingshot) ammo. After setting up the Atlas, I oiled the bearings. It was then that I discovered that one of the roller bearings from the Myford outer bearing assembly fit perfectly into the hole in the top of the bearing cup. Without pressing it in, it fits so snugly that I cannot remove it with bare fingers. In order to grasp it, I need to be wearing the nitrile gloves that I always use when working on my machinery.
